This is a little web tour of our wonderful trip to China.

We started our journey on Friday with a two hour flight from Bradley to O’Hare. After a five-and-a-half hour delay in Chicago, our flight to Beijing took just over eleven hours.  We actually flew over the North Pole!

Our first stop was Shangri-La’s China World Hotel in Beijing. The room itself was beautiful. I loved the all marble bath. Here is a shot out of our hotel room window at night:

On Saturday morning, we took the first tour of the trip.  We loaded up on the bus and headed over to Tiananmen Square, which is right next to The Forbidden City. Tiananmen Square is an enormous plaza in the heart of Beijing that spans 100 sprawling acres. Beijing will be hosting the Olympics in 2008. Here’s a shot of Megan near the Beijing 2008 countdown clock:

These are the mascots for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.  Very cute:

The China-Africa Conference was just starting while we were in Beijing.  The nice thing about China and Africa getting together to discuss trade is that unlike those pesky Americans and Europeans, you can guarantee that human rights won’t be on the table. You can see the giant sign in the background of this shot:

Here’s me trying to look cool next to the guards:

Here’s an incredible statue of some Worker’s Revolution types.  Notice the profile of Mao:

Here’s a close-up of a dragon on top of the stone pillar you can see on the right-hand side of the last shot:

Our tour guide for the day, Mr. Ma:

Male lion overlooking the fountains in front of the wall to The Forbidden City.  You can tell he’s male because in China the lions are usually in pairs and the male has its foot on a ball:

Here are more lions inside The Forbidden City.  The female has her paw on a cub:

This is the wall next to the bathroom inside The Forbidden City:

Speaking of which, the Chinese do “going to the bathroom” differently than we do.  Don’t let the sign fool you:
