Theodore Roosevelt Walden

Theodore Roosevelt Walden, Ted, was my maternal grandfather. I spent many weekends and holidays wih him, hanging out on his little farm along the banks of the Walla Walla River, just on the edge of the little town of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. He was the son of John and Rose Walden and was born and raised on Weston Mountain, above the rustic western town of Weston. (Weston lies about half way between Pendleton, Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington).

Grandpa Ted was born in 1902 and died in 19XX?. He was married to Dora Wicks Walden, who died in 1994. They lived in or near Milton-Freewater, Oregon, all their lives. They had three daughters: Evelyn, Verna (my mother), and Rheta.

Grandpa was a farmer in his younger years, growing what, peas and potatoes on Weston Mountain. In his teen years they would haul a horse-driven wagon full of potatoes to the restaurants in Pendleton. Later in life I remember that he worked in St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington, managing the laundry department. When he bought his house on the edge of Milton-Freewater at 1900 South Main Street, he owned about 30 acres. He had much of it cultivated at one time in fruit trees and row crops, and I believe he expected to keep it that way, but over the years sold off pieces here and there until when he died it had dwindled to 11 acres.
