Sarah Cummins

Sarah J. Cummins was my great, great grandmother. She was born September 16, 1828 in Illinois and died in Chester, Montana in 1919. She is buried in the same town my mother was born and raised in: Weston, Oregon,

She wrote a book titled “Autobiography & Reminiscences” that talked about coming over the American plains to Oregon in 1845 (second wagon train into Oregon). The book is still available from time-to-time on Amazon, although currently is out of print. It contains vivid accounts of fighting off bears and Indians and fording big rivers on the way to Oregon. At the end of her book she has a letter that was delivered to her personally by Kit Carson.

She was a personal friend of Marcus and Narcissus Whitman, the first white settlers in Oregon. She also knew Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indian tribe.

She was the grand-daughter of Benjamin Crocker, and related to Charles Crocker of banking and railroading fame.
