Note: The tutorial video series, Understanding the Universe: An Introduction to Astronomy, continues from October through May.  Showings are in the Kachina Lounge in the Social Hall from 4:00 to 5:00 PM every Thursday, except those Thursdays that fall on the same days as regular meetings, star parties, field trips and holidays.

Regular Meeting.  Speaker: Fr. José Funes, S.J., Vatican Observatory, Galaxies in Our Backyard.  (A study of galaxies in the vicinity our own galaxy, the Milky Way.)

Regular Meeting.  Speaker: Dr. Robert S. McMillan, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, "The Spacewatch Survey for Hazardous Asteroids”  (What the Spacewatch Project at the University of Arizona has
done to increase its rate of detection of asteroids and how volunteers from the general public can help discover fast moving  asteroids in near real time from their home computers.)

Catalina State Park

Annual Fall Star Party.  Bring your own food and drink for a picnic dinner starting at 5:00 PM.  Bring your telescopes and binoculars.  If you don’t have any, there should be plenty available for your enjoyment.  Reservations not required.

Regular Meeting.  Speaker: Mr. Louis Faix, amateur astronomer and retired engineering executive, “The Star of Bethlehem: What Was It Really?” (A scientific analysis based on the position of the planets, historical writings and biblical accounts some 2000 years ago.)

Regular Meeting.  Speaker: Fr. Chris Corbally, S.J., Vatican Observatory, “Getting to Know Thy Neighbors”.  (A study of stars in the Milky Way that neighbor our Sun.)

Thursday, February 19,  7:00 PM Navajo Room

Regular Meeting.    Speaker: Dr. David Levy, Searching for Comets:  A Night Watchman's Journey.  Dr. Levy is the co-discoverer of the renowned comet Shumaker-Levy 9 as well as many other comets.  He is scientific editor of Parade Magazine and the author of several books.  There will be a book signing after his talk.

Required Club Business: Appointment of Nominating Committee Chair.

Wednesday, February 25 Field Trip

 

Special Tour of the University of Arizona Mirror Laboratory.  Meet behind the Vistoso Center by 12:45 for carpooling.  The tour is at 2:00 PM.  Parking is tight at the Lab.  Attendance is by reservation only.  Contact Jim Lindahl for reservations and information.

Required Club Business: Election of officers.

Friday, April 16,, 5:00 PM Catalina State Park

Annual Star Party and Barbecue. Paid up members and their guests only.  Reservations required.  The barbeque starts at 5:00 and stargazing at dusk. The club will furnish hamburgers, hotdogs, condiments and cold soft drinks.  If you wish hot drinks, etc., bring your own.  Of course, bring your telescopes and binoculars.  If you don’t have any, there should be plenty available for your enjoyment.
