Star Parties

With clear dark skies and world-class observatories, Tucson is often referred to as the astronomy capital of the world. At star parties, we learn to identify stars, planets and constellations with the naked eye and where to look for deep-sky objects with telescopes and binoculars. We generally hold two star parties per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The parties have been held in the Group Area of Catalina State Park.  This location offers reasonably dark skies without our having to drive great distances from our community. This area has a sizeable, flat gravel expanse that is very convenient for setting up our viewing equipment. Adjacent this area are fireplaces and picnic benches that we utilize before dark.

Fall Star Party

The party in the fall is essentially a "brown-bag" affair.   Members bring their own dinners, and the club provides a charcoal fire for those wishing to barbecue.

Spring Star Party

The party in the spring is for paid-up club members only and for up to 2 of their guests.  Additional guests may be invited by club members at a charge of $5.00 for each guest over 11 years old.  The club provides barbecue fare, all the fixings and soft drinks.

The turnout at our star parties is generally very good with several members bringing their telescopes and binoculars to the events.  Our viewing experiences have been further enhanced by the magnanimous participation of a knowledgeable staff member of Starizona, who brings an advanced telescope.
