Long Bio
Originally from Spokane
Washington, Christian and his family spent three and half years in
Okinawa, Japan during his childhood. In sixth grade, Christian started
taking private percussion lessons from Paul Raymond, the principal
percussionist of the Spokane Symphony. In junior high school,
Christian became interested in jazz after listening to the Dave
Brubeck Quartet and he started studying drumset with Ed Brown, founder
of Gold Line Percussion. After High School, Christian received
scholarships to study jazz vibraphone with world-renowned vibraphone
player, Prof. Tom Collier, head of Percussion and Jazz Studies at the
University of Washington. Christian majored in percussion and minored
physics at UW, studying the relationship between music (sound) and
physics.
After teaching and playing
percussion professionally in Seattle for three years, Christian moved
to Sapporo, Japan to teach English with the Jet Program (Japan
Exchange and Teaching Program). In addition to teaching English,
Christian also played with many local jazz groups around town and met
many great musicians.
Upon finishing the the
JET Program in 2006, Christian returned to Seattle and spent the next
two years working towards his masters degree in percussion
performance at The University of Washington. Since graduating in
2008, Christian has been splitting his time between a leading his own
jazz vibraphone group; playing with Ian Dobson's Pan Leggo Steel Drum
Band; and playing freelance percussion for orchestras, musicals, and
other ensembles in the Seattle area. In addition to playing and
teaching music, Christian also teaches English to refuges and
immigrants with Refuge Women's Alliance (ReWA) in SeaTac, WA.
