Episode 14- Atlas Belched
The Case
There really isn't one. David meets Phil West in a bar while they are both wallowing in misery. Phil forgot to lock up his boss's (diplomat and finacier Thornton Wellman) rolodex for 1 night in 6 years. Unfortunately that particular night the office was robbed and the rolodex is gone. David seizes the opportunity to solve a case for Thornton Wellman. They go looking for the rolodex and find it. David goes to see Thornton Wellman and finds out Phil didn't turn in the rolodex but is holding it hostage. Dave and Madie convince him to turn them in. They will tell Wellman that Phil was kidnapped with the rolodex and Dave and Maddie 'rescued' them.
What's Really Going on Chris?
Lou LaSalle owns the largest and most influencial Investigation firm and he wants to buy Blue Moon. Maddie tells David and he is upset that she is even contemplating selling. He leaves the office to go "drown" his sorrows at the local watering hole. That's where he meets Phil. David thinks that solving a case for Thornton Wellman will make Blue Moon some connections and put them on the map. He feels he has something to prove to Maddie. When he solves the case, he rushes to Maddie to tell her the good news. Maddie informs David that she met with Lou LaSalle and sold the agency. He leaves upset. The next morning Maddie finds out that David is leaving Blue Moon and intends to start his own agency- Addison Investigations. Later, Maddie is dismayed to find out that she has no role in the 'new' Blue Moon. Meanwhile, David meets with Thornton Wellman expecting to be lauded for finding the rolodex. Instead, Wellman starts to suspect that David had something to do with it disappearing. That night Dave and Maddie both admit that they made a mistake. Maddie asks David to hire her so she can help him with the Wellman case. The next day they convince Phil to turn in the rolodex and make up the story about the rescue. They find Lou LaSalle at Wellman's office. He offers to get Phil his job back with a promotion and guarantee of no prosecution. He also offers to give Blue Moon back to Maddie. David says that it is his decision because he is the boss now. He tells Phil to to take the deal. Maddie asks David if he is sure, if he knows what he is giving up. He says yes. They turn the rolodex over to Lou LaSalle and leave.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
Maddie tells David her decision to sell Blue Moon is business. He asks, "is that what the last 10 months have been, just business? I'm not done, we're not done yet." She accuses him of taking it personally and of course she is right. This is another example of Maddie thinking that if she returns to her former life (without David) she'll be happier. David is upset that he still doesn't mean that much to her, that she'd sell the agency and cut him out of her life. That's why he is so interested in finding Wellman's rolodex. Then 'no connections' Addison will get some connections and Blue Moon some business. Hopefully it will be enough to prevent Maddie from selling the agency.
