Episode 37- I Am Curious....Maddie
The Case
There is none.
What's Really Going on Chris?
Maddie comes home to find Sam waiting for her with breakfast. She explains she was out on a case and didn't want to wake him. He asks if she was alone, she says no without looking at him. Sam gives up and insists that Maddie get some rest. He puts her to bed and as he leaves Maddie's mom calls. Maddie tells her mom that nothing special is going on. Sam leaves her room and is obviously upset by this. He decides to go to David's for a heart-to-heart. He tells David that he proposed to Maddie last night but that she was confused. He tells David that if he cares about Maddie he should tell her how he feels. He tells David that he's known Maddie a long time, what she needs and what she wants, and he (David) is not even close. Finally he tells David to back off, because," it's obvious who and what's best for her."
David waits in her office for Maddie to come to work. When she arrives David confronts her about why she didn't tell him about the proposal. She asks him what difference it would have made? Maddie complains that David has been acting like the "jilted lover" but that he won't even put himself in the game. He wants her to tell him everything while he says nothing. She asks him again to tell her how he feels about her, but he says nothing. She admits Sam proposed and that she hasn't answered yet, but is considering saying yes. She pleads with David to "speak now or forever hold your peace." He refuses to say anything and turns to leave. Maddie sadly asks," are we through?" David answers, "sure sounds like it" and leaves.
Sam shows up to take Maddie to dinner. Agnes and Bert convince David (who has trashed his office) that if he has something to say to Ms. Hayes that he should say it now, before it's too late. David runs down to the garage and stops the car saying he wants to talk to Maddie. Maddie leaves saying she can't take this anymore, and that she wants them both to leave her alone. David punches Sam who then beats Dave up pretty good. Maddie returns, David leaves and Sam and Maddie get in the car. They argue. Maddie is upset that Sam told David about the proposal and that he showed up and "staked your claim on me like I was a piece of real estate." Sam is upset that Madie hasn't given him an answer yet and that she told her mom that nothing special was going on. Maddie decides that she doesn't want to go to dinner anymore. They return to Maddie's house where they agree to spend some time alone. Maddie goes to the office to think and finds David's office trashed. Agnes shows up to clean David's office and finds Maddie there. Agnes knows that Maddie is upset and suggests they go drinking because "all the boy detectives do it." While at the bar Agnes and Maddie talk. Maddie decides that she isn't ready for marriage and that she needs to go home and give Sam an answer.
Maddie arrives at home to find the house dark. In her bedroom she gives a speech to Sam saying that she loves him, but that she loves David too. She suggests a last night of love for them and then crawls into bed to find David, not Sam. David explains that he came over to apologize to find Sam leaving. He fell asleep due to the pain pills he has been taking. Maddie is furious that David heard her speech without telling her he was there. She tells him to leave. He says he can't go because Maddie, "said some things" but Maddie interrupts by reminding David that he "hasn't said a word." David insists that he doesn't have to say anything ," you know it and I know it, you feel it and I feel it." She rejects his advances. He tells her that he doesn't want to force himself on her because she's "not worth it" and no woman is. He starts to leave. Maddie gets really mad and tells him that he's "Mr bargain basement and if there were a sale on human beings he'd be the last to go." David yells to her that she's "not a real person but a poster" who "deserves another poster." They yell at each other about their perceived weaknesses and call each other nasty names. Maddie slaps David and tells him to get out. David stands there stunned and Maddie slaps him again telling him to leave again. David continues standing there and catches Maddie's third attempt at a slap. He pulls her closer to him and they begin kissing furiously. They roll around on the floor, and then go up to Maddie's bed. Just before the credits roll, David tells Maddie he loves her (you can't hear it over the soundtrack and Maddie's hand partially blocks his mouth, but it was confirmed by Bruce Willis in an interview.)
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
Sam knew David had a "thing" for Maddie since the dinner they all had together, but Sam never considered David a threat until now. First Maddie won't give him an answer, then she sneaks out in the middle of the night to be with David, then she tells her mom that nothing special is going on. Sam is now worried. He always counted on the fact that Maddie didn't have a "thing" for David, but now it appears that she might. That is why he goes to talk to David. It's not arrogance, or being mean, he's just starting to think he's losing (or has lost) Maddie. Maddie doesn't tell David about the proposal because she wants to hear what David has to say independent of what is going on with her and Sam.
David is furious that Maddie din't tell him about the proposal. After Maddie's late night visit, the I hate you's, and the kiss he knows there is something going on between them and feels he had a right to know. But she's right, he doesn't until he "puts himself in the game" and says something. Unfortunately he refuses (for the 4th time) to answer Maddie when she bluntly asks him to tell her how he feels about her. He acts like a deer caught in the headlights. He and Maddie are still waiting for the other person to make the first move.
David throwing the first punch continues to show Sam is better than David, it also shows David's passion and impulsiveness. Maddie is right, Sam has treated her like a piece of real estate. Maddie's confused because Sam is the kind of guy she always thought she should be with and she can't say yes to his proposal and she doesn't know why. She's still trying to convince herself and David that David is the 'wrong' kind of man for her. David also tells her that she is wrong for him. They have the nastiest fight they ever have. Despite that, neither of them can hold back their unbridled passion for each other any longer. Although Sam appeared to be the perfect man for her, he lost the halo when he left her, David didn't leave. Maybe Dave is the right guy after all?
