The Case
There is none.
What's Really Going on Chris?
Maddie arrives at work to find the employees of Blue Moon involved in a strip poker game. Maddie is not upset by this, or by David's attempt to lie about what was going on. David immediately knows something is wrong. He harangues Maddie ceaselessly to find out what it is. Maddie doesn't want to tell him. She gets so aggravated by him that she leaves for the day.
That night she returns to the office to get her things and finds David and Bert there. David claims he stayed late to teach Bert about poker, but both Maddie and David both know he waited to talk to her. David again begins nagging Maddie to tell him what's wrong and becomes upset when she continues to refuse. Finally she gives up arguing with David and agrees to tell him, warning him that he won't like it. She basically is sexually frustrated and wants to go out and find a man for a one night stand so she can "be bad." This really upsets David and Maddie gets mad at him for the double standard that exists, he can fool around but she can't. She storms out and David is afraid that she will do just what she threatened, as she says "my chastity belt is pinching me."
David needs Bert's car to follow Maddie so he lies to Bert about a case with Interpol and they follow Maddie around all night. They end up in a bar where Dave laughs as men try unsuccessfully to "pick up" Maddie. In the bar another blonde steals Maddie's coat and hat then leaves. Dave follows her thinking it's Maddie. Blonde #2 meets up with a guy and goes up to his room. At this point David is almost insane with jealously and climbs around the window ledges peeking in the windows looking for her. He gets caught by blonde #2 and her man. They tussel. David is knocked out and wakes up next to the man, now dead, with a gun in his hand. The police arrest David for murder and he is thrown in jail. A few minutes later blonde #2 is also locked up. She admits she killed the man and promises to tell the police the truth. She asks David why he was following Maddie. He says he doesn't know. She tells him that he is in love with her. He denies it, but she insists. David thinks about this while blonde #2 convinces him to tell Maddie. He gets released by the police when they figure out he didn't do it. He leaves the police station at 4 am determined to tell Maddie that he loves her. It's pouring rain when he arrives at Maddie's house. He pulls up some flowers from her garden and pounds on the door. The door begins to open but Maddie isn't there, an unknown man is. David leaves without saying what he intended. As he turns to go, a drop of water appears to fall from his eye. Is it a tear or a raindrop?
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
So it's finally happened. After 2 1/2 years of daily sexual tension with David, Maddie can't take it anymore. But she doesn't want to sleep with David (well she wants to but....) it would be too risky and complicated. In this case a total stranger would be "safer" for her. Besides, she really has no idea how David feels about her other than that they are friends and he repeatedly implies he wants to sleep with her. She doesn't want to tell David about her mood because she knows he won't want to hear it, but he insists, so she does. I think she told him to see his reaction and to test their friendship (a friend wouldn't react jealously.) David is shocked that she would contemplate sleeping with someone that wasn't him, it was supposed to be him. David goes to great lengths and risks to follow her all over town. David reacts with shock when blonde #2 suggests he is in love with Maddie. Is it possible he really doesn't realize it? Yes, I think so. Both he and Maddie are in love with each other at this point, but they are both in a state of denial. Both are too afraid that the other doesn't care and that they will be hurt to be honest with themselves about how they feel. The look on David's face when Sam answers the door could break your heart. But why doesn't Dave say something to Sam or wake Maddie up? He's too hurt that Maddie seems to have slept with someone else and, worse yet, does not return his new found love. Some say it's out of character for him to just leave, but they're wrong. David has always been insecure about Maddie and this just makes it worse, he clams up and refuses to say anything in the next 3 episodes. Poor Dave and Maddie, what could have been!
