Episode 19- Every Daughter's Father is a Virgin

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie's parents come to town. Maddie's mom tells Maddie that she thinks her husband is having an affair. This really upsets Maddie and she decides to follow her father so that she can prove to her mother that he isn't. David convinces Maddie to let him do it, to prevent her from getting a 'scarred psyche' if she sees something she shouldn't. David follows Mr Hayes and discovers that he is having an affair. He returns to the office and tells Maddie. She decides she must tell her mother the truth. David tries to convince her not to, but it doesn't matter because Maddie is unable to tell her mom. Instead she yells at and hits her dad telling him that both she and her mother know. The next day her mother lets Maddie know that everything is fine, except Mr Hayes is upset about the fight he had with Maddie. Maddie goes to her father and they both break down in tears. He apologizes, tells her the affair is over and that it will never happen again.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

Maddie is understandably upset to find out that her parents marriage is in trouble. She had always thought their relationship to be ideal. What's really interesting is not only that David offers to and then follows Maddie's dad, but that she lets him. It's really the first time that Maddie lets David in on her personal (especially family) business. It also shows a trust of David that she has never displayed before. Later David is faced with a difficult decision- whether or not to tell Maddie the truth. David had advocated lying in many episodes to date, especially when you're in a jam. He lies without remorse to anyone if it's advantageous. In this case he knows he'd spare Maddie a lot of pain if he lied. He chooses to tell her the truth despite how much he knows it will hurt her. This is another example of David doing something for Maddie that shows how much he really cares for her. Is David in love with Maddie yet? Some say yes, some say no. I'm not sure...This episode shows Maddie and Dave not only going on a date, but in reality, Dave's meeting the 'in-laws.'
