Episode 52- And the Flesh Was Made Word

The Case

Brian Gates hires Blue Moon to find the secret woman his partner (John Wicklowe) has fallen in love with from afar. His obsession is ruining the business. The only clue Brian has are the ramblings John has written about her in his journals. Maddie and David find her and the woman John is in love with is Brian's wife Mary! Brian ends up dead and John is accused of the crime. Maddie figures out the truth.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie and Walter get an annullment. The office celebrates while David gets to work. The entire office staff push David into Maddie's office and they talk. She tells him about the annullment and David asks if this means she is single again. She responds yes. He thinks she needs time as she is on the 'rebound,' but Maddie assures him that she finds no reason to put her life on hold. David asks if he asked her out, would she go? She says yes and suggests Saturday. David tells her that he has to check his calendar and then gives her a bill for the wedding.
Later, while Maddie and David are looking over John's journals, Maddie tries to talk about "us." David avoids the subject, then claims he has to leave and check on Terri at the hospital. The next morning Dave and Maddie have John Wicklowe under surveillance. Maddie confronts David about his negativity about this case and correctly concludes that he's really negative about "us." She knows that he didn't visit Terri last night and she wants him to "talk about all those things you don't want to talk to me about." Maddie accuses David of not being "there" when they are alone together. They are interrupted by the case.
Later in the car, they don't talk but we can hear what they're thinking. David is having doubts about their future based on their past and Maddie correctly guesses that he is scared. They both realize that things are different now, but still the same. They return to the office. They go to their separate offices and think about each other. David gets a call from Terri, he forgot to pick her up from the hospital. He starts to leave, but Maddie stops him and she wants to talk. Maddie follows him and accuses him of avoiding her and tells him that she knows what he is doing and why. She asks him to forget his doubts and let them start with a clean slate. David hears this and gets mad. He drags her back into her office and launches into a speech about 'clean slates.' David claims that she is the one who left for 4 1/2 months and came back married only to divorce the guy a week later. All he did was wait. David claims that he has a clean slate and implies that Maddie does not. He tells her that he still cares about her, but he doesn't like it. He promises to help her out with the baby and that is his committment to her. He leaves to pick Terri up from the hospital.
Upon bringing Terri home, David tells her that he has to talk to her. Terri says that she knows what it is, that he wants to try to work things out with Maddie and that she doesn't have a chance. He explains that he doesn't understand it, but it is something that he has to do. Terri understands and tells David that Walter Bishop has been calling her.
During the chase scene David tries to stop Mary from committing suicide over John Wicklowe. He tells her that you "have to get past the past, if 2 people love each other that's all that matters. The future is what you make it." Maddie overhears this and asks him if he really means it. He says yes and they kiss.
At the office, David brings his calendar to Maddie's office and they schedule dinner, Lamaze class and 'talk' after class every Tuesday night at 9pm (8pm central) :)

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

Maddie has finally reached the point we've all been waiting for! She wants David, tells him so and wants to start seeing him romantically again. Unfortunately, he hesitates and avoids the subject with her. Maddie correctly figures out what is wrong. You really can't blame David after all that's happened, but after 4 years of waiting for Maddie to get to this point the fans are frustrated by his reaction.
In the clean slates speech David makes he says something significant. He says something like, "So I guess I still care, but I don't have to like it. In fact, I don't like any of this. And yet, I 'll be here for the baby, I'll help you through that. So I guess I have a commitment to you." He very much makes it clear he still has feelings for Maddie, but he doesn't say that he loves her. He also makes it clear that his commitment to Maddie is directly related to the baby. In the end we're given hope that David is on his way to forgiving Maddie by his speech ablout getting past the past to Mary.
