Season 2
Episode 18- In God We Strongly Suspect
The Case
Caroline Kandinsky hires Blue Moon to protect her from her dead magician husband. He promised to come back from the dead and kill her. She's afraid her might make good on his threat. Maddie and Dave 'babysit' the corpse in the morgue but the body is gone the next morning. Mrs Kandinsky then ends up dead. The next day her husband dies (for a second time) while stealing diamonds. Maddie and David visit the coroner and discover the truth.
What's Really Going on Chris?
It's Maddie's birthday. David and the staff surprise her with a cake. Maddie reacts cooly (imagine that!) David finds out that Maddie is a little blue. David says that he's surprised that she would react to aging like this. She says it's not that, each year on her birthday she evaluates her life. She feels that the past year was a "giant leap backward" for her. David doesn't understand because the past year was a great one for him.
Maddie is skeptical that the Great Kandinsky can come back from the dead. David, of course, disagrees. He believes that things that are inexplicable are possible. They get into a discussion where we find out that Maddie doesn't believe in fate, magic or God. This concerns David who believes that Maddie has every reason, not only to believe, but to be thankful (after all God gave her looks, brains and him). He is worried about her soul and wasn't able to sleep. This annoys Maddie. She tells him that both of her soles (while looking at the bottom of her shoes) are fine. At the end Maddie admits to David that the existence of God has crossed her mind, and that she doesn't want him losing any more sleep over her. David tells Maddie that if he ever finds himself over her he won't be thinking of sleeping, besides she is 'covered' in the soul department because he prayed for her.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
This episode continues the discussion started in "Somewhere Under the Rainbow" about the unexplainable. David obviously believes in it, has faith in things that are not tangible. Maddie continues to doubt that which cannot be proven. Last time the discussion centered around myths and fairytales, this time it's magic and God. What is really revealed is Maddie's lack of faith. The only thing she believes in is her idealistic version of the world where "you work hard, keep your nose clean and get ahead." David is usually portrayed as the cynic, but Maddie is really the cynical one here. She is very practical, but a naive idealist at the same time. David is a romantic (not romantic in love, but in the way he sees life) realist. What a seemingly incompatible pair!
Memorable Moments
- Both scenes of David singing "Happy Birthday"
- The 'flying fig' exchange
- David telling Maddie he prayed for her
