Season 2

Episode 7- The Lady in the Iron Mask

The Case

Blue Moon's first real client! Barbara Wylie hires Blue Moon to find the man (Frank Herbert) who, in a jealous rage, threw acid on her face and permanently disfigure her. She claims she still loves him . Maddie and Dave find him. After informing Ms Wylie of his whereabouts, he ends up dead. Dave and Maddie confront her upset that they were used in a revenge plot. They follow her and find out that she didn't really hire them. They both go undercover to try to get some evidence against the real killer.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie walks in on an employee fight that David arranged to improve 'morale.' Then Dave and Maddie fight and it is interrupted by an actual client. They then argue about whether to take the case or not. Maddie doesn't want to get involved in such a sad tale. We later find out that she had an obsessive beau in college. David says they should at least try because they need the money. He tells her that he would stick with her through poverty- after all they're "partners forever" and that he wants her to be the one to throw the first clump of dirt on his coffin when he dies.
David later convinces Maddie to give Barbara Wylie the information they found when Maddie starts doubting whether they should. They do, and then celebrate by going out to dinner. Maddie is very proud that she is proving that she is not just a pretty face. Soon after, they find out Frank Herbert is dead. After they figure out that Barbara Wylie didn't do it, they get into their first huge fight. Maddie blurts out that she'd "be better off in business for myself." David gets really mad and claims that she's not his first choice for a partner to complement his "complex personality." David tells Maddie that she needs him and that he is her "lifeline." She disagrees and they both decide to resolve the case by themselves in their own way.
At the end David considers for the first time leaving Blue Moon. Maddie then apologizes and tells him she wants to be the one to throw the first clump of dirt on his coffin. She also tells him she's glad he is her partner and kisses him on the cheek.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

It's ironic that Maddie complains about David's "stupid' idea, but then goes and does it. There are several references made that imply that Dave and Maddie are a couple. David's reference to Maddie throwing the first clump of dirt on his coffin is interesting. This 'honor' is usually reserved for the spouse. He tells her they will be 'partners forever' and then Agnes asks Dave "are you and Ma havin' a fight?" This is the first time David contemplates leaving, but Maddie gets him to stay.
