Episode 36- Maddie's Turn to Cry
The Case
The Johnson case continues. Elaine Johnson is not satisfied with just pictures from the surveillance. She wants audio tape so that she can hear not just what Alan McClafferty says to his wife, but how he says it. David supposedly has a date, but he offers to break it and offers to do it alone so Maddie can go out with Sam. Maddie insists on going with David so that her plans with Sam aren't interrupted by another "emergency." They see and hear Mrs McClafferty commit suicide. Maddie figures out that they were set up. They go to confront Elaine Johnson and find Alan McClafferty there. A chase ensues.
What's Really Going on Chris?
Maddie confronts David about the "important decision" he never got to tell her the night before. He lies and says he "decided" they should hire Bert full time. Maddie doesn't buy it, but accepts it because it's the only explanation David will give. Maddie returns to her office and has a conversation with herself about David's answer. Agnes comes in and asks what is going on between her and Mr Addison. Maddie disappointedly says, "nothing, nothing is going on between me and Mr Addison." Agnes then tells her that something is making Mr Addison crazy, and it's not Monique because she is pretending to be Monique for him. Agnes asks if there really is a Sam. Maddie says yes and that they're both really teriffic (meaning Sam and Dave.) Agnes concludes that something is making Maddie crazy too, and Maddie doesn't deny it.
Later in the car, Maddie accuses David of being jealous- he doesn't deny it. Maddie complains that she is having trouble figuring out what is going on with her and Sam because "everytime I turn around there you are." She insists that she and Sam are none of David's business anyway. David says it is because he has worked with her for the last 2 and a half years. Maddie complains that he has worked, "no slaved to take nothing about me or my business seriously and now all of a sudden there's Sam." Maddie continues to get agitated and continues to yell at David for no apparent reason.
Maddie breaks her date with Sam telling him she has to work. When he leaves she kind of looks guilty like she didn't tell him the whole truth. That night David gives her another chance to go back to Sam but she refuses. While in the van waiting for Mrs McClafferty to come home, David entertains Maddie by them playing the "Dating Game."
After the suicide, on the way home, Maddie and Dave discuss the case. David is suddenly judgemental about people sleeping around. Maddie talks about how people grow apart and become attracted to other people, even though they may not know why. Maddie gets home at 2 am to find Sam waiting with a lamb dinner for her. He asks her to marry him. Maddie says that she feels like her head is going to explode. Not the answer he was hoping to hear, he tells her he needs more than that. She replies, "it's nothing, but maybe it's not nothing, maybe it's something." She admits to being very confused. He insists that she takes a bath and they'll talk about it in the morning.
That night she sneaks out and goes over to David's. She demands that he tell her what he meant to say in the restaurant. She tells David that Sam is perfect for her but that there's something between them. They tell each other that they "hate" each other and then kiss. They run off to finish the case. The case is solved and dawn is breaking. They discuss going to breakfast, and act like two teenagers about to go on a date. Suddenly Maddie remembers Sam is waiting for her at home.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
Maddie gives David another chance to tell her, but again he blows it. I think David is so hurt and insecure at this point he has no intention of saying anything to Maddie, particularly after she accuses him of being jealous. He will not risk a sam-opening-the door scene again. He'll make sure that Maddie says something first. That's also why he invents Monique. Maddie insists on pushing the issue by going on the stake out with David. She breaks her date with Sam (something she refused to do the night before) and tells David that she doesn't want to risk being interrupted by David again. The real reason is that she is confused and wants a "date" with David. It's ironic that David chooses to entertain themselves with the Dating Game in the van. It's exactly what Maddie is doing with Sam and David, and on some level David knows it.
David really doesn't have any idea how Maddie feels about him until she shows up at his place after Sam's proposal. She gives him another chance (#3) to tell her and he refuses. The "I hate you" exchange is really Maddie and Dave speak for I love you and they both know it, but don't want to admit it.
