Episode 50- Maddie Hayes Got Married

The Case

Yet another incredible episode with no case. Have you noticed by now that most of the best episodes have no case?

What's Really Going on Chris?

David arrives at work to find everyone cleaning the office. He asks why and Agnes tells him that Maddie has lunch reservations (David says," I knew they'd start having reservations") presumably with her husband and they all think Walter Bishop is coming by. David tries to get Maddie to break her lunch plans, when she refuses, he guesses that they are with Walter. When Maddie doesn't deny this, he tries to goad Maddie into bringing Walter to Blue Moon so that 'everyone' can meet him. Maddie refuses, so David picks up the phone and invites Walter himself. Walter agrees to come by. Maddie tells David, "I hate you." He walks out of her office saying, "Stop, I'm blushing."
David smiles an evil grin as he walks back to his office followed by Bert. Bert offers to take David out for a "liquid lunch" to get him away from the "Walter Bishop fan club" and then offers to beat Walter Bishop up in the garage for David. David laughs and insists that this isn't necessary, that he should meet Walter Bishop. David tells Bert that Walter, "bachelor #2," was just the "best package of cornflakes" Maddie could come up with on short notice. David guesses that he probably looks like Sam (or that guy who does the wine cooler commercials-a sly reference to Bruce Willis who promoted Seagrams Golden Wine Coolers at the time.) Bert agrees to stay- for David's sake.
Walter arrives and meets David. David is surprised by Walter. Walter tells David that he'd like to "forge a relationship" and that he knows about the "thing" between David and Maddie. David denies that he and Maddie had a "thing" and that it was in her imagination. He sweet talks Walter then walks away chuckling and looking quite pleased. Walter goes to Maddie's office and tells her that he met David. He says that talking to David is like talking to the fog but that he seems like a pretty nice guy. He also tells her that David has a lot of "sparkle" and he undertands what she saw in him. Maddie doesn't answer and they go to lunch.
After lunch, Maddie goes to David's office and asks him what he thought of Walter. David tells her that Walter was nice enough, Maddie replies that Walter said the same about David. Maddie tells David that she hopes that they can get along as they will see each other from time to time. David apologizes and starts laughing- a mocking, condescending kind of laugh. Maddie asks him why he is laughing and he says she's right, he shouldn't be laughing- it's really quite sad- a poor guy like Wally...and David begins laughing again. Maddie gets mad and starts to leave but David stops her. He says that he understands, although he was more than willing to help her out, that she was in a jam and did the best she could under the circumstances. She denies what David is implying and says that she loves Walter. David asks what her parents think. Maddie reaction confirms that she hasn't told them. David accuses Maddie of being ashamed and embarassed of Walter. Maddie denies this. David says he is an expert in what ashames and embarasses Maddie because before there was Walter there was him. Maddie continues to declare her love for Walter and says she wishes she had a big church wedding to show everyone how much Walter means to her. David offers to throw the wedding for her so that she can do just that. He then invites the whole office.
MacGilicuddy and Viola decide to throw a bachelor party for Walter. David admits he has no enthusiasm for this particular party, he wouldn't want to ruin their fun.
That night at Maddie's, she and Walter fight about the wedding. Walter sees no harm in it and doesn't understand why Maddie is so upset. She tells him that it is a dare- that David is making mock. Walter tries to calm her down and tells her the wedding would be a good way to put David behind them and get on with their marriage. He tells her that he's even going to the bachelor party they're throwing for him. Maddie tells Walter that David exists to "throw monkeywrenches into my peace and sanity- and I thought I'd found a way to stop all that." Walter hears this and becomes concerned. Walter asks her if she still cares for David. She yells no and then agree to the wedding to make Walter and David happy.
Meanwhile David is at Terri's. She made him dinner but he's not eating it and is really distracted. She asks if she did something wrong, he replies no. He tells her that it's been crazy at work and invites her to the wedding he's throwing for Maddie. She asks David if he is very unhappy, he denies it. He then tells her that he doesn't think he can get through it without her.
David and Richie show up at Walter's bachelor party already half drunk. David doesn't really want to go in but Richie convinces him they'll breeze in then out. Bert shows up in drag. The stripper cancelled and now he's going to "pinch hit." David then goes in and talks to Walter. Walter observes David and says,"looks like you've already had quite a night," and David responds, "I've already had quite a year." Walter then asks David if they are the only 2 not having a good time and David answers yes. David then offers a toast, "to the best laid plans." They party 'til 6 am.
Terri picks David up for the wedding. He's late and hung over. Richie and Bert are busy packing the church by paying homeless people to attend. The minister goes to Maddie and Walter to talk about the seriousness of marriage, but Maddie says it's no big deal. We find out that she still hasn't met her parents yet. Maddie walks down the aisle, but is distracted by David putting his arm around Terri. She coninues to turn around and look at Terri and David throughout the ceremony. Terri goes into labor during the ceremony and Terri and David start to leave. Maddie interrupts her ceremony and follows them claiming David is too hung over to drive Terri to the hospital. David and Terri continue to leave and Maddie insists on going too. David leaves yelling, "get married." Maddie rushes out of the church yelling, "try and make me."
She and Walter(who caught up with the limo as it was leaving the church) follow David and Terri to the hospital. Maddie demands answers from David. She wants to know who 'that woman' is and if she (Terri) is having David's baby. Terri is finally assigned a room and David and Terri leave. Maddie starts to follow but Walter holds her back saying, "hold it." After looking at Maddie, he states the obvious, "you're not going to hold anything are you?" Maddie gives him a guilty look and follows David into the labor room. David is infuriated by Maddie's presence. They fight. Maddie asks David if he loves Terri. Terri answers, "of course not- he's crazy about you." David vigorously denies this, but Terri asks Maddie if she loves David. Walter walks in the room with a reply, "Of course she does, she's crazy about him." Maddie denies this and the fighting continues with both David and Maddie yelling that they hate each other. Terri can't stand it and tells them to kiss. Maddie jumps on David and they engage in a long passionate kiss. Terri delivers a baby boy and names him Walter Hayes Addison Knowles (initials- WHAK!)
Later while Terri and Walter sleep, Dave and Maddie talk. David tells Maddie he probably won't be in on Monday, that none of this makes any sense, the baby isn't his and Maddie isn't his. Maddie apologizes and and tells him she never meant to hurt him. She admits that she made mistakes, first by running home, then by marrying Walter, but she now knows that she is the only one who can fix this. She tells David that she loves him and was jealous when she saw him with Terri. She agrees that they have to stop hurting each other and would understand if that meant he had to leave her. She just needs to tell him one thing, "that I wish, with my whole heart, that this were your baby inside me." David thinks a minute, then invites her to get something to eat in the cafeteria. She acepts this as David's way of accepting her apology and sticking around.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

What an episode!!
David continues with his mischief by trying to disrupt Maddie's plans for lunch with Walter (kind of like he disrupted dinner plans with Sam). He's right, Maddie is embarrassed of Walter. She's embarrassed because she's afraid she'll fail David's test (whether or not she really loves Walter). David wants to find out the truth, which is why he invites Walter to the office. David makes another reference to the "dating game" by calling Walter bachelor number two. It's apparent he thinks they're playing the game again.
Maddie is right, the wedding is a dare from David. He's daring her to stand up before everyone (especially him) and marry Walter when she loves David. They had a discussion about weddings in "The Bride of Tupperman." Maddie makes a big deal about a girl's first wedding. David knows the "wedding" in Las Vegas to Walter wasn't real to Maddie. He's forcing her hand, calling her bluff. David knows she doesn't love Walter, but he's not sure she loves him anymore. It's clear that David expects that she will do it, that's why he wanted Terri there for support. Cute how he put his arm around Terri while Maddie was walking down the aisle, just so Maddie could see it.
The hospital scene is classic. It's nice to see Maddie chasing David for a change because she's going crazy. When Sam was in town it was the other way around. The fight in the hospital is one of their all time best. At the very end as they walk to the cafeteria, there is a sly reference to Cybill Shepherd's promoting beef for the Beef Council at the time when David asks her if Maddie is a "beef person."
