Episode 3- The Next Murder You Hear
The Case
There is no client. David gets Maddie to agree to investigate the mysterious on-air murder of a prominent radio talk show host, Paul McCain. David figures if they solve the case, they'll get tons of publicity for Blue Moon. When Maddie finds out Paul McCain was having an affair with a married woman, she changes her mind. She tells David they need to find a case with a client. Later, Maddie listens to the tapes of the "Lonely Hearts" show McCain hosted, is moved by his sensitivity, and decides she misjudged McCain. Dave and Maddie search McCain's place only to find his mistress, Laura. Maddie returns alone that night to find Paul McCain alive. He faked his death so that his boss, his mistress's husband, would not find out about the affair. The next day Laura's husband (Paul's boss) turns up dead. Paul hires Blue Moon to prove he didn't do it. Laura hires Blue Moon to prove she didn't do it. Then Sonny, the station manager, hires Blue Moon to prove Laura didn't do it. Dave and Madie set up a meeting at the station that night to confront the killer. Maddie thinks it's Laura, David thinks it's Paul.
What's Really Going on Chris?
David accuses Maddie of being "repressed or obsessed or one of those 'essed' words" because she gets 'stiff and tense' whenever they talk about men or sex. She tells him that only he makes her 'stiff and tense.' He responds by saying that is because he is the only one in her life. He claims she is in bed alone every night by 9:30. Maddie gets very angry when David is correct about this. This is when she pulls out Paul McCain's "Lonely Hearts" tapes and drives around town all night depressed by looking at all the couples. The next day, while investigating the case, David tells Maddie he is concerned that is Maddie developing 'feelings' for a dead man- Paul McCain. Maddie accuses David of being jealous, which he vehemently denies. David tells her that in order for him to be jealous, Paul McCain would have to have soemthing he wants- which he does not. This obviously hurts Maddie's feelings but they drop the subject. Later, when Maddie is at Paul McCain's finding out that he is still alive, David is getting drunk in a bar and calling Maddie every 15 minutes. He tells the bartender that if Maddie "falls for anybody- it should be for me" not a dead man. The next morning Maddie finds him hanging on the back of her office door. He was upset that she was out all night and graciously offers to "take care of any of her needs," after all it's his fault that she has become a 'wanton' woman. He tells her that he understands how she could have all these built up 'needs' working so closely to him every day. Maddie refuses and kicks him, promising to forget that this conversation ever took place.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
It's only the third episode and already it starts! Up until now David was making lots of lewd comments to Maddie, but this is the first real indication that he is interested in anything more than sleeping with her. By him getting jealous, we find out that he really does care. We also find out how well David knows Maddie and that he really is the only man in her life. The fact that only David makes her 'stiff and tense' is the first real indication that David affects Maddie too, more than just making her annoyed.
