Episode 63- In 'n Outlaws

The Case

There is none.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Agnes is called to jury duty and is in danger of missing meeting the Viola family at their reunion. She is selected for the Gibson-O'Rourke trial. Kathleen O'Rourke was murdered. Her business partner, Gibson, is accused of killing her. They ran an accounting firm together for 20 years and had a volitile relationship. They were very emotional, passionate and fought a lot. They were involved romantically on and off for those 20 years and Gibson admits under oath that he loved her. Everyone thinks Gibson is guilty except Agnes, who says she understands how 2 people can love and hate each other at the same time (after all she's watched Maddie and Dave for the past 5 years!) She gets sequestered and misses the Viola family reunion. Bert is anxious because no one in his family believes he has a girlfriend, and his father disapproves of all the choices he has made in his life. To get the trial over with faster, Bert investigates Gibson and O'Rourke and finds out who really killed Kathleen O'Rourke. He grandstands in the courtroom just as the jury is to declare Gibson guilty (Agnes caved in to the demands of the other jurors.) Agnes and Bert rush to the airport and meet his family before they leave town.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

The Gibson-O'Rourke situation is supposed to mirror the David-Maddie situation. In this episode Agnes says to Bert that she understands how 2 people could love each other and hate each other at the same time, like Mr. Addison and Ms Hayes. She says that she knows that Mr Addison would never kill Miss Hayes, because it would how much he cared and would give her the upper hand. I thought that this was strange (although I concur with Agnes about why David would never kill Maddie.) When did they ever seem to hate each other? There were times they were mad, angry, disappointed, upset, irritated and infuriated by each other, but hate? There are a few occasions when they tell each other that they hate each other, but it was always a type of "code" for actually loving each other, or them flirting or teasing. Can anyone out there find any evidence of them showing any emotion close to hate in any episode up to this point? Please point it out to me because I can't think of any. Once again, I think this was thrown in to get us ready for the rest of the Annie storyline, despite the fact that it didn't reflect what had happened to this point.
