Episode 13- Portrait of Maddie

The Case

They don't really have a client. An artist, Phillip Wright, Maddie has never met before apparently commits sucicide after finishing a portrait of her. Maddie buys the painting, called "Charlie's Treasure," but then gives it to Phillips's brother (Charlie) when he comes looking for it. When Charlie also ends up dead, apparently committing sucicide while looking at the painting, the police begin to suspect foul play and question Maddie. David and Maddie are then accosted at gunpoint by another man. He was the accomplice of Charlie and Phillip when they stole "The Dutchess" a valuable painting several years ago. The Phillip gave him a fake copy of the painting and hid the original. He's convinced the painting of Maddie is a clue from Phillip to Charlie as to where "The Dutchess" can be found. He finds a clue that he thinks will lead him to "The Dutchess" and ties up Maddie and Dave and leaves. Maddie is tied in the pose in the painting and she sees a reflection in the mirror, a neon sign that says "Painting" with an arrow. This leads them to "The Dutchess" and a twist in the case.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Blue Moon is in the black!!! Maddie balances the books and finds they made over $2,000. She and David are trying to figure out how to spend the money when the police call. David doesn't understand why Maddie buys the painting and then gives it to Charlie Wright. As he says, "one of the most photographed women in the world goes out and spends the only money she ever made, other than saying cheese, on another picture of herself." He later accuses Maddie of thinking that this whole situation is romantic and that she'd be disappointed to find out those men hadn't killed themselves over her. Maddie says that it doesn't matter because they "died for her." David wonders ,"what about us poor slobs that live for you?"

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

David is right, Maddie really does find it romantic that these men 'died' over her in a tragic way. She really doesn't have any appreciation for the "poor slobs that live for her" until the end when she asks David to tell her about them again and she blows him a kiss.
