Episode 12- Somewhere Under the Rainbow

The Case

Kathleen Kirkpatrick hires Blue Moon for protection. She's a leprechaun and someone is after her pot of gold. Maddie doesn't want to take the case, and wants to refer her to a psychiatrist. David wants to take the case because he figures a leprechaun's money (whether she is one or not) is as good as anybody else's. David takes the case (Maddie disavows any involvement) and realizes that someone is following her. David gets Maddie involved anyway and Maddie asks for proof that Kathleen is a leprechaun- and Kathleen leads them to the pot of gold. David does some research at the library (imagine that!) and finds out that her father stole the gold from the Bank of Ireland 20 years ago and stiffed his 2 accomplices. The man following her is the son of one of his accomplices. They tell Kathleen the truth, who decides to return to Ireland. At the airport she's chased again and caught by the son of the father's accomplice. According to leprechaun rules she has to give up the pot of gold. After he leaves she asks Maddie and David to 'catch' her so that she can be free from being a leprechaun and lead a normal life. Maddie and David agree and get a reward in return which makes us wonder, maybe she really was a leprechaun after all.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie is surprised to find David knows something about art. He's a fan of Peter Paul Rubens. Maddie seems impressed until she finds out it's because he paints naked women with "major maracas." She accuses him of having a vacant soul and no poetry. But when Maddie refuses to believe that Kathleen is a leprechaun, David accuses her of the same thing (and of not clapping for Tinkerbell-for the record she did.) They go through the episode vascillating between believing and not believing Kathleen.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

Maddie has always made jokes about David's lack of intelligence, but now it becomes quite obvious that she really does think she is intellectually superior to him. Kathleen shows us a stark difference between Maddie and David that becomes an ongoing conflict in their relationship. David believes in things that can't be seen or proven- fate, God, leprechauns. These are beliefs based in faith and in feelings rather then in thinking. Maddie doesn't believe in anything she can't see or can be proven. She has faith in things that are tangible and that are rational. She's not very good at feeling (except anger) just as David isn't very good at thinking things through. This conflict is revisited many times throughout the series. The beauty is that neither of them are wrong or right (as it is with most of their arguments and fights.)
