Season 4
Episode 40- Come Back Little Shiksa
The Case
Donald Chase hires David to find a woman he met and fell in love with last night at the ball (there are many Cinderella references in this episode.) He gives David an earring to track her down with. They find Melissa, but she tells them that he was lying. She left her husband on the east coast because he is an assassin. Her husband hired Donald to find and kill her. She admits she was falling for Donald at the ball until he called her by her real name, Ellen. David convinces her that he is really in love with her and she agrees to talk to him on the phone. She does and Donald and Melissa meet. They next day they are both dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Later, they are both very much alive when they tell David they faked their deaths to escape Ellen/Melissa's husband and want to live happliy ever after if only David will let them.
What's Really Going on Chris?
David waits for Maddie to come to work. He tells Agnes that he "finally got her" and that this is the beginning of the "fall of the roamin' Addison." Maddie never comes in. Finally David goes to her place and finds that she and her clothes are gone. Back at the office he frantically calls cab companies, train stations and airports looking for her.
Meanwhile, Maddie has arrived in Chicago her hometown. Her parents are happy to see her, but surprised at the sudden, unannounced and open-ended visit. Mr Hayes is immediately suspicious. He asks Maddie about David and the business but she answers evasively. She finally calls David to tell him where she is. He's angry that she left, but relieved that she's OK. She tells him she has to think about their relationship and left suddenly so that he wouldn't talk her out of it. She claims she has no idea how long she'll be gone, but asks him not to call her at her parents. She claims she can't "sort through her feelings" if she jumps every time the phone rings because it might be him. He reluctantly agrees. At the end of the day he has a moment of weakness and goes into her office to call her. He has a claymation dream sequence where she reminds him he promised not to call. He says he still doesn't understand why she is away and why this is so hard. He tells her that they should be working this out together, not apart. She says that this is her way, she has to think about it alone. He accuses her of thinking too much and maybe that is their problem, she accuses him of not thinking enough. The scene goes on and Maddie turns into a witch. She turns David into a horny toad. She then turns into a princess and kisses him, the dream ends.
Later, with frustration and anger, David smashes Maddie's BMW beyond belief in the underground parking garage. He goes back to the office and pretends that everything is OK to his 'audience' in the office. Behind his closed door he puts his head on his desk and stares at the phone.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
Maddie is still freaked out. She doesn't understand why she keeps this "thing" with David going. It frightens her the way she has "given' herself to David despite what she tells herself she thinks. David is miserable and frantic about Maddie being gone. Maddie knows that this is difficult for him and hurts him, but she thinks she needs to get away from him to think straight. David can't think about anything else. He neglects the case and Bert does most of the work. Unfortunately for Dave (and us) his misery will go on for quite some time.
There is one really interesting thing about this episode. During the claymation sequence, Maddie says to David," where do you get off even asking if we could..." She never finishes the sentence. One wonders if this is a reference to a proposal that happened in the last episode. Alas, we'll never know.
This case also reflects what is going on with Maddie and Dave. Melisssa and Donald have the same initials (D&M). Melissa ran away from Donald because of a mistaken perception she had of him. Donald is desperately looking for the woman he loves. There will be a continuing pattern of Blue Moon cases reflecting aspects of Dave and Maddie's relationship in the next two seasons.
Memorable Moments
- Maddie arriving at home and her fathers questions
- The claymation sequence
- David smashing the car and then going to the office
