Season 3

Episode 26- Symphony in Knocked Flat

The Case

There isn't a paying client, but as usual, Dave and Maddie get involved anyway. While ON A DATE WITH DAVID Maddie gets passed some information the FBI wants. The next day the FBI shows up to Blue Moon to retrieve the information, but 2 teams of agents show up wanting the same thing. Dave and Maddie decide to find out what is going on and turn it in to the FBI themselves. They find out that an internsational incident will occur at the auditorium that night. They call the FBI but, while they are in the phone booth, the evidence is stolen. They go to the auditorium that night and figure the plan was to kill a Russian boxer. David goes into the ring disguised as the American boxer to attempt to warn the Russian.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie is upset with the bouquet of roses she receives at work from her date last night. Everyone in the office is curious to know who sent them, but Maddie won't say. David and the "guys" are attempting to guess in his office when Maddie enters. She gets mad at David for using her private life as "amusement", but he convinces her to tell him what is wrong. She admits she went on a date the night before. She says that every 6 or 7 weeks she gets her hopes up and goes out, but is always disappointed. She claims that the successful men she dates don't take the time to plan the evening. They start the date by saying, "let's see what happens." They drive around looking for a restaurant without reservations, and end up eating at a cheap "dive." They go back to his place to watch a game while he works up the courage to ask her to stay, which she decided she wouldn't when he said, "let's see what happens." David suggests that maybe it's not the men with the problem, maybe it's her. He tells her that it's possible that she doesn't know how to have fun. She takes offense at this and tells David that he is not the person she would turn to to improve the situation. He tells her that hers is not a situation he would expend energy to improve, but David gets her to describe her perfect evening "just for the sake of argument." She starts to describe her perfect evening and slips by saying "you could wear a tux" to David. She changes it to "he would wear a tux" but it's too late, David already sees him chance. He complains that her evening doesn't sound like any fun, she says she wants a "fine" evening and doubts that David would able to pull it off. David takes her up on the challenge and offers an exchange, he'll show her a "fine" evening if she'll show him a "fun" evening. At first she declines, but David suggests it's because she can't do it. Then she finally agrees. David even agrees to go first and pick her up tonight at 8.
He spends all day trying to get tickets to somewhere Maddie can wear a gown. He finally scores tickets from a scalper to the symphony. Meanwhile, Maddie tries on every gown she owns and is visibly nervous when David shows up. They drink champagene in the limo and it is obvious Madie is very impressed, until they arrive at the symphony and find out the seats aren't together. Hilarity ensues and they get kicked out. Maddie is so embarrased she leaves without David. The next day at the office Maddie is still livid but David still insists that she has to fulfill her part of the deal by going out with him tonight. They are arguing about this when the FBI shows up. Later in the episode, David teases Maddie that going to the fight is his "fun" evening.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

This is also one of my favorite episodes. Poor David! He tries so hard and gets it screwed up anyway. He finally gets Maddie to agree to go out with him on a REAL date (their 4th by my count.) They both act like 2 kids going to the prom. It's obvious that David really cares by all the effort he expends to make it a "fine" evening. It's also obvious Maddie care a great deal too. No woman tries on all her shoes and dresses if she doesn't care about the guy. David tries so hard to show Maddie that he can be the kind of guy she says she wants. If only the evening had gone well, what might have been. I truly think Maddie would've 'let' something happen based on the way she acts when she answers the door and the way she looks at him in the limo. At the very end, when David is knocked out, Maddie calls David "baby."
