Season 4

Episode 42- Tale in Two Cities

The Case

There is none.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Mr Hayes is now convinced that Maddie is hiding out from something or someone. Maddie still hasn't said anything to her parents in the 2 weeks she has been home. Mr and Mrs Hayes are getting frustrated, they just want to help.
Back in LA, Agnes is doing "raindances" hoping she'll find Ms Hayes is back. Agnes is worried that Maddie may never come back. David assures her by lying and saying that he talks to her 4-5 times a day. They get to the office and both get excited because they think Maddie is back- but it's just MacGilicudy and Bert fighting in Maddie's office. David tries not to show his disappointment, but it's clear he is upset. He goes back to his office and appears to cry.
Mr and Mrs Hayes decide to throw a party for Maddie, but she doesn't want it. Maddie gets mad and tells her parents if she wanted to be badgered she'd go back to LA. Mrs Hayes yells at Maddie and tells her that there will be a party and she'll pretend to enjoy herself for her father's sake.
In LA David has hired an accountant to straighten out Blue Moon's books which have become a mess. David occupies himself by reading the Chicago Tribune. Agnes suggests going to Maddie's to bring in the mail and papers and water the plants. David rushes out to do it. While at Maddie's he hears that Maddie is checking her messages. He tries to pick up but it is too late. He goes back to the office and leaves Maddie a message. He says that he is sick of all of this, he's wasted too much time on her, he's getting back to his life, and she should just stay in Chicago. He leaves and finds Bert and MacGilicuddy in the garage about to play "chicken" over Agnes. David stops this nonsense just in time and leaves with Bert saying they both need to blow off some steam.
The Hayes' throw the party and Maddie is bored. The doctor who lives across the street stops over to deliver some of the Hayes' mail he got by mistake. He and Maddie meet and Maddie asks him to take her for a drive. She ignores him the whole ride, then apologizes and says she hasn't felt well lately. He suggests a check up. Dave and Bert are also 'partying.' They go to a bar where Bert grieves over his apparent loss of Agnes. David complains that, "as soon as a broad knows you care, they start zipping up the body bag." Bert suggests that there must be a woman worth it somewhere and David replies, "I don't think so." They pick up 2 women and go back to their condo to use the hot tub. Bert decides he can't spend the night because he keeps thinking of Agnes. He tries to convince Dave to leave too, but Dave stays. As David is getting dressed to leave, the bimbo he was just "with" wakes up. He says he's gotta go and starts to utter an obligatory "maybe I'll call you." She says whatever, maybe not. He leaves and wanders the streets of LA, not looking like a guy who just scored with a hot blonde babe. Meanwhile, Maddie finds out she's pregnant. She calls David, but he isn't home and she doesn't leave a message. She calls Agnes next and leaves a message telling her about the baby. She instructs Agnes not to tell David.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

So, David finally gets mad, can we blame him? He makes a desperate attempt to return to his one-night-stand lifstyle before he fell in love with Maddie. But it doesn't work. David is not happy after "boinking" the blonde babe. It's clear that he realizes he can't go back, no matter how hard he wants to or tries.
Maddie also has an opportunity to 'hook up.' Again, she is presented with the 'type' of man she thinks she thinks she should be with- an intelligent good looking doctor. But she's not interested. It seems that she can't go back either.
The first person she calls about the pregnancy is David (a clue that she really believes that he is the father?) but he's with the blonde babe. Too bad, things might have been different if he had been home. Then she calls Agnes, but why? I think she needed desperately to talk to someone and wanted David to know. She just didn't know how to say it. She told Agnes knowing that it would get back to David.
