Season 3
Episode 27- Yours, Very Deadly
The Case
Gail Woodly hires Blue Moon to get her pen pal to stop writing her letters. She has been carrying on an "affair" by mail for several years with a man she has never met. Her pen pal is in love with her and the letters have started to threaten her husband. Maddie and Dave find the pen pal and tell him to stop. They go to tell her the good news and find her dead. They go back to confront the pen pal at his place, but find he's dead too in an apparent murder/suicide. David figures something doesn't make sense and plants a "seed." Maddie and Dave wait at the post office to see if David's hunch is correct.
What's Really Going on Chris?
First appearance of Viola! He's a temp hired by Blue Moon to work on the books. Maddie and Dave arrive at work to find Agnes on top of Bert (spelled Burt in this episode for some unknown reason) on his desk. Bert begs for help. Dave finds it funny, Maddie is disturbed byAgnes' behavior and by the behavior of Mrs. Woodley. She wonders what happened to romance? What happened to the rules? One is supposed to meet someone, flirt a little, then flirt a lot, go out, fall in love, get married and stay married. David, ever the romantic realist, explains to Maddie that this is the 80's, the rules have changed and you have to get romance where you can get it, even if it is an adult video or a 25 cent booth.
Agnes spends the whole episode chasing Bert around, trying to get him to make out with her. When he doesn't come in and she can't find him she gets very upset. Maddie finds Bert hiding under her desk. She asks Bert why he he doesn't ask for reassignment by his temp agency if he is so miserable. He admits he like Blue Moon- it's like high school where every day is an assembly or field trip. He also says he doesn't know how he feels about Agnes. Maddie suggests that he find out by letting Agnes catch him. He does this by letting Agnes catch and hug him. When he doesn't return the hug Agnes is upset by his rejection.
At the very end, Maddie and Dave start to write anonymous letters to each other, but then give up. Both throw their letters in the trash and leave together.
Chris's Obsessive Analysis
Once again we see Maddie's very idealistic and naive ideas of love and romance. Once again we see how David is much more cynical and equates love and romance with sex. The introduction of Bert is wonderful. The character of Bert adds a lot of comedy to the show and the relationship between Agnes and Bert becomes a nice counterpoint to Dave and Maddie's.
Memorable Moments
- Maddie "doing" David (get your mind out of the gutter, it's not what you think!)
- Great chase scene in the Post Office
