his paragraph summarizes the short curriculum vitae below, with emphasis on ITS-related aspects of
my present work. In addition to teaching college and graduate level courses related to the areas of expertise
listed below, I have an early publication on vehicle human factors based on vehicle-driver dynamics during
roadway testing (Shook & Spelt, 1985). I did the initial technical development of specifications and
sensor/data-acquisition selection for the Data Acquisition System for Crash Avoidance (DASCAR), a project
sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I taught courses in human factors
and ergonomics for eight years prior to coming to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and also conducted human
factors research in several areas. Most pertinent for ITS, in addition to the DASCAR work just mentioned, is
work done in two areas:
was responsible for the human factors aspects and training design for an Advanced Traffic
Management Training Center prototype. This center was designed to train traffic engineers on advanced
traffic management techniques for integrated corridors (combined freeway, arterial and surface street
management). The training simulator was shipped back to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for
their further research there.
he goal of the In-Vehicle Signing project, on which I was the PI, was to display roadway signs inside the
vehicle. Such signage includes not only safety and regulatory highway signs, but ultimately also motorists' services
("yellow pages") information and route guidance. This effort included the conceptual design of an in-vehicle display
system, as well as a system for managing and prioritizing information presented to drivers. This project evolved
naturally into a research task on Driver Distraction -- my last piece of work for ORNL. I built a driving simulator,
based on software developed by Systems Technology, Inc. The simulator is shown on this page. Here is the
Associated Press story that appeared in the Knoxville News-Sentinal.
hese latter projects were sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
