First Gear Start Switches

A little while ago I installed a Bergwerks First Gear Start module.  I ordered it with the Security and Sport Mode options.  The basic module and Sport mode requires to two switches installed in the coin tray between the seat heater switches.  I love the FGS Module, but wasn't too crazy about the switches in the coin tray.  So I took out the ashtray insert (since no smoking in the car) and left the switches lay loose in the ashtray drawer.  This was a temporary solution until I could figure something else out.
This is what I came up with....

Since I replaced the original Becker radio that used a fader switch located in the center console and the new radio had a built in fader switch, I decided to use that location for my FGS switches.  I planned on scrapping the fader switch and using the switch shell to house two mini-slide switches.  It turned out the fader switch just pops apart so I didn't have to destroy the switch.

I got the two mini-slide switches from Radio Shack.  Side by side they fit perfectly in the fader shell.  All I needed was something to mount the switches to.  I found a PC disk drive slide rail (Fig5) has recessed area meant for disk drive mounting screws that was the perfect size for the two side switch throws and the width of the rail fit perfectly inside the shell.  I cut as piece of paper that would fit inside the fader shell to use as a template for cutting a section of the rail that would fit centered in the the fader shell.

I soldered the two wires to each switch's lugs, ran the wires through a heat shrink tube and crimped a molex connector (male) to end of the harness.  I crimped the other molex connector (female) to the FGS switch leads. (molex connectors not shown)  I secured the switch assembly in the fader shell with tie wraps.   I didn't want to glue it in place in case I need to take it apart.

And this is what it looks like.  I still want to touch it up a bit, like cover up the screws.  Flathead screws would be better, but I didn't have any.  I decided to grind the round head flat and paint them black..
