Viols in a Desert Oasis

Program

Welcome to our  11th viol workshop and the fifth workshop under the direction of Alison Crum. An outstanding faculty has agreed to provide instruction and coaching in a comfortable resort setting.

This year is the 350th Anniversary of the birth of Henry Purcell. While he has not written that extensively for larger ensembles of  violas da gamba, his sacral and secular anthems certainly are worth singing and playing.  However, there will be no shortage of other beautiful music for viols. We will tune at a’ = 415 Hz.

Early morning classes will concentrate on warm-up and technique. Later classes will explore consort music for viols from England and the European continent, while the evening sessions will feature relaxed consort playing with faculty joining in.

Faculty

John Bryan is Professor of Music and Head of Music and Drama at the University of Huddersfield, UK. He first started playing renaissance and baroque instruments as a student at York University, and has developed a joint career as player, researcher and teacher, performing internationally and recording regularly with ensembles such as the Rose Consort of Viols, Musica Antiqua of London and the Consort of Musicke.  He is an artistic adviser to the York Early Music Festival (which he helped to found in 1977), founded the North East Early Music Forum, is in demand as a tutor on early music summer schools and courses and has made regular contributions to BBC Radio 3’s early music magazine programmes Spirit of the Age and The Early Music Show.

Alison Crum has earned world renown as a viol player and teacher. She studied with Wieland Kuijken and Jordi Savall, and has made over eighty recordings mostly with the Consort of Musicke, the Dowland Consort, Musica Antiqua of London and the Rose Consort of Viols.  President of the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, Professor of Viol at Trinity College of Music, and a visiting teacher at colleges and universities in Europe and the USA, Alison has been called the 'doyenne of British viol teachers'.  She directs summer schools and workshops worldwide, and her highly acclaimed book, 'Play the Viol', is published by Oxford University Press.

Larry Lipnik has performed with many acclaimed chamber and early music ensembles including the Waverly Consort and Anonymous 4. He is a founding member of the vocal ensemble Lionheart, the viol consort Parthenia, and is a frequent musical collaborator with artist William Wegman. In addition to performing, he is currently co-director of the New York Recorder Guild, enjoys a busy teaching schedule, and has recently prepared an authoritative edition of Francesco Cavalli's opera La Calisto, commisstioned by the Juillard School and performed by the San Francisco Opera.

Although Roy Marks played the piano since childhood and the guitar since adolescence, it was as an artist that he always considered his  vocation to be. Roy studied at the Royal Academy in London and for many years taught painting and drawing in adult education. In his late thirties however, upon hearing someone playing Telemann, he put down his brushes and has since devoted himself almost entirely to Early Music, studying first the recorder, then the viol and, latterly, the lute. As well as teaching and performing, Roy also composes music for period instruments, some of which has been performed and recorded.

One of the most highly regarded interpreters of pre-1800 music, Mary Springfels has been Musician-in-Residence at the Newberry Library, Director of the Newberry Consort, Director of the Early Music Ensemble at Northwestern University, and a member of the Chicago Baroque Ensemble until 2007. She has also appeared with most of the other important American period ensembles, including The New York Pro Musica, The Waverly Consort, The Folger Consort, Pomerium Musices, and the Concert Royal, as well as the Orpheus Band, The City Musick, and the Harwood Ensemble in Chicago. She has taught at Duke University, the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), and The University of Chicago, and she is a sought-after teacher for viol workshops internationally. She has recorded for Nonesuch, Titanic, Columbia, Decca, Koch International, and Harmonia Mundi USA.

Other Information

Linda Shortridge will be available for minor viol repairs and bow-rehairing. She also will bring and install the new "Peghed" pegs, the "revolution in viol tuning". It is most important that you let Linda know in advance of the workshop if you want to have the new pegs installed and what size viol they should go in. Her e-mail: lindashortridge@aol.com

Boulder Early Music Store (BEMS) will offer recent music additions for viols and other "goodies" for viol players. If you let Carol and Kim know in advance what you want, they might be able to bring the item to the workshop. Contact them per e-mail: Carol@bems.com or Kim@bems.com .

Registration: The workshop filled up early, even before the information on this web site was up. It needs to be understood that the 30 spaces in this workshop are primarily for viol players at the medium intermediate and higher playing skill level who reside in Southern Arizona. As the number of full and part-time residents in Southern Arizona increases, the number of guests who can participate in this workshop will decline. In addition, we love to have a viol doctor (Linda) and a music store (BEMS) to provide music for the workshop and the participants. The facility and the unique character of this workshop do not allow us to increase the size of this workshop.                                                       We have started a waiting list, but judging from our past experience, it rarely happens that a space gets vacated.
