Rolling Stones History Tour: Redlands

June 1999: After leaving Cotchford Farm, my Swedish friends and I headed further south to West Wittering near Chichester, West Sussex. This is the location of Keith Richards' country home, Redlands, and it is well-known in Stones lore. It was here in February of 1967 that the infamous bust took place during a party, which resulted in Mick and Keith spending a short time in jail.

As we walked up Redlands Lane, we got the shock of our lives when we discovered that Keith was at home! I guess I should have known this, as it's pretty much common knowledge that Keith usually stays at Redlands when he's in town, and this was right after the Wembley shows! The gates were open, the lights were on, and his beautiful Bentley sat gleaming in the driveway along with a few other vehicles. We had not anticipated this at all and to be honest, I was scared to death! Not wishing to disturb him, we got the hell out of there. We were later told by locals that he was to be there for 3 weeks, and that Anita Pallenberg had been down for a visit earlier in the week.

I was greatly disappointed that I wasn't able to get a good picture of my own, as Redlands is very secluded by trees. However, my friend Hakan has given me the OK to use his photos from a previous trip in 1996. At that time, Keith wasn't home, and my friend was able to get closer and take these photos.
