The Mighty Thor!
A vinyl model by Horizon
OK, so this is a site devoted to PLASTIC models. I prefer plastic over vinyl, I enjoy the detail and challenge of sculpting a model out of that box full of parts. Plus, I love the old models. However, I appreciate any good model and I just had to get this Thor when I found it (on sale) in a hobby shop.
This one is a really dynamic pose of the God of Thunder. I used the same
painting techniques I use on plastic, all brush work. I painted it to look
exactly like in my comic books, for instance the helmet is German metallic
silver over flat black to give it that "steel" look. The cape that came with
the figure was clear plastic and I thought looked too "stiff". I solved the
problem by using it as a mold and forming a cloth cape soaked in diluted
white glue to stiffen it. I followed that with several coats of clear poly
(I love that stuff).
The model only included the small rock his one foot is resting on as a base,
so of course it likes to tip over. I took Sculpty and formed a simple base,
then painted it to match the rock.
