The Yorkshire Terrier is known as the "big dog in a little package." Originally bred to hunt rats in the mines of England, the original Yorkies were much larger than the dogs you see today. The Yorkie is one of the oldest breeds in the American Kennel Club recognized breeds list, having been admitted to the registry the year after it was established.

The Yorkshire Terrier, like all dogs, has its pros and cons. Because of their small size, they can adapt to any living environment and are thus perfect for small-space living, such as an apartment or condominium. They are high energy, but can achieve their daily exercise need by chasing after a ball in the living room. Yorkies are, above all else, a terrier, which means they are smart and have a great sense of humor, but also can be stubborn and demanding at times. Because of their small size and curious nature, it is imperative that they be closely monitored, lest they get themselves into trouble. Their long coat requires a weekly bath and daily brushing to keep it free of tangles and matts.

Health concerns associated with the breed include dental problems, luxating patellas, liver shunts and hypoglycemia. Dental problems can be averted by a minimum weekly toothbrushing and regular veterinary checkups.
