Crafts Knitting Quilting Spinning Tatting Weaving Favorite Links MY JOURNAL
I grew up in Southern Illinois, in Jefferson County. My Mom and Dad were from farm families in Wayne County. Dad had worked on the railroad, Mom was a homemaker with a family of 6 besides Dad and herself to care for. She kept us busy, many times with arts and crafts. She taught me to make doll clothes by the time I was in grade school and I used her treadle sewing machine to sew blocks for a quilt when I was in the seventh grade. She taught us all to color with crayons, be creative, and make many of our gifts. She taught me crochet and embroidery as well.
Over the years I have picked up other crafts that I like to do and still use to make the gifts we give to others. Homemade gifts are fun to make and fun to receive.
Drop into my shed and we will talk art and crafts...If a craft is old, does that mean it is a dying art? Many people say that expression today. But if someone can do it, and demonstrates it, and makes items to sell or give as gifts, is it really a dying art. I don't think so.
Some of the crafts that I specifically like to do are listed as links in the table below. If you have time take a look and as I get time I will trade these samples with others, as I have a lot of things I have made.
I sometimes find that sharing how, why and when can be a lot of fun. If you would like to write me a line or two my link is available. Welcome back anytime. Next time, perhaps I can put the coffee pot on.
"Teaching about the old crafts"
It is important to remind people crafts are still around.
One way of doing it is to do demonstrations.
I particularily like to spin for demonstrating. Most of the time I spin Alaskan Malamute Dog Hair. Here I am working on wool in the Cragg Cabin at the Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area.

I also like to demonstrate Bobbin Lace. Here I am working on a Torchon Bookmark. I am at the Fabric Center in Morris, IL. I am wearing my re-enactment 1830 Dress.
