You might ask, "What is the difference between counseling and coaching?” and “How do I know that I need one or the other?”  The following may help.

Counseling vs. Coaching

Counseling works by helping you objectively look at behaviors, feelings and thoughts in situations that may be causing problems in your life.  It helps you learn more effective ways of dealing with those situations.  Counseling is a joint effort in which you and your therapist identify goals – what you want to have happen – and agree on how you’ll know when you’re making progress.  If additional services are needed, you will be referred to appropriate professionals in the legal, financial, physical and spiritual health professions.

Everyone needs to talk to someone sometimes and in today’s mobile society, traditional support systems may be missing.  You may benefit from counseling when:

bullet You feel like you can’t do it alone
bullet You feel trapped, like there’s nowhere to turn
bullet You worry all the time and never seem to find the answers
bullet The way you feel affects your sleep, your eating habits, your job, your relationship or your everyday life
bullet It’s not getting any better

Coaching helps you achieve your personal goals by bringing balance to your life.  Through a process of self-assessment guided by your coach, you will focus on taking action toward realizing your vision of a centered, fulfilled life.  Together, you will assess your individual strengths in many areas, including your career, your health, your physical environment and your self-image.  You will evaluate your needs and set attainable personal goals.  You will learn what you need to do to reach your full potential and make your dreams a reality.

You may benefit from coaching when:

bullet You want balance in your work, family and spiritual life
bullet You feel tired, stuck, bored or unfulfilled
bullet You want to ive with more passion, meaning, and mastery
bullet You are in a major life transition (career change, divorce, etc.)
bullet You want more time, money and happiness
