You have probably installed many programs since you
bought your computer, So many in fact that if you go to try and find a
program its actually becoming really hard because they're not alphabetized,
New programs are on the end, or mixed in. This is a really quick, really
easy tip to organize your start menu in Windows Here are the steps:
How to change your Monitor's Screen Resolution: This is a quick and easy tip. How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup (extracted from Microsoft's knowledge base) Note that this
information applies only if you are not using user profiles.)
To prevent Windows from prompting you for a password at startup: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control
Panel, and then double-click Network.
To stop your computer from going into 'Sleep mode' or 'Hibernation': There are two methods:
How To Avoid Spam or
At Least Slow it Down The simplest way to verify
an email address is to make the spam an HTML email with nice bright colors
and pictures. The trick is that an HTML email is a web page and like a
web page, the pictures get sent to you by a web server. Just viewing the
email tells the web server where to send the picture, and also tells it
your email address. This means that all you have to do is view an message
in your email program for the spammer to know you've opened his message.
This is so simple to do, so devious that it has become the most common
method for spammers to use. The fix is to set your email program to never
download HTML graphics. Always run antivirus software and keep it up-to-date.
Some spam can download and install nasty programs on your computer. These
programs are commonly called spyware.

and your computer will run smoother and faster. WINDOWS 98, 98SE, ME, & XP
Click on start, then setting, then control panel. Open Internet options from control panel Click on the advanced tab Then on the restore defaults button. Then apply Then click on the Programs tab and reset web settings Uncheck reset home page.... Make sure IE should check that it's default browser (unless you use Netscape) Then ok Then click on the Securities tab There you will see 4 icons Click on each one of them individually IF the default level button lights up, click it and apply Do this for each of the four icons This will reset the default settings to the proper setting for internet explorer to work properly Then click on the general tab.... clean cookies... temp files.... Click on settings.... bring the number down to 80 or below (this is the amount of disk space used to store temporary internet files and Internet explorer needs it!!) The preferred and recommended number is 80 IF it is below 80, (NEVER UNDER 60 or your browsing will be extemely sloooooooow) leave it at the number it is (if it's under 60 already, check the amount of disk space you have empty and delete 'junk) Now click on the 'View Objects' Button You will see a list of installed programs which should all say 'installed' If they do not say installed, right click and remove them (this will not effect your computer at all) Close the window after checking them Make sure automatically is checked Click OK to close settings.. (Internet options should still be open) Make sure automatically is checked Clear history Close out Internet properties... Top of page How to get Defrag to finish running: FIRST: You should always clean your cookies and temporary internet files, Before running defrag. Doing this well free up more space AND defrag can organize your files and programs much better. IF SCANDISK AND/OR DEFRAG WILL NOT FINISH: DO THIS: Sometimes Defrag appears to freeze at the 10 per cent mark. If it does so, wait a bit longer... Either a program that is running in the background is stopping Defrag..... OR Your computer is figuring out how to best organize your files and will start running again in a few minutes. IF DEFRAG DOES NOT CONTINUE: Shut down your computer complete. Turn the power on and start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard, or hold down your 'left' Ctrl key. When the black option or choice screen comes up, choose the 'safe mode' option. (This option stops windows from loading all it's drivers and all startup programs) WINDOWS MELLINIUM EDITION USERS: Your computer will go directly to System Restore WAIT till the screen finishes loading and x out of it. Then run Defrag in safe mode. Defrag should run successfully Top of page MRU's, what they are and how to remove them: M(ost)R(ecently)U(sed) lists contain information such as the names and/or locations of the last files you have accessed. They are located ALL OVER your registry, and for almost ANY file type. By looking at these MRU lists, someone could determine what files you opened/saved/looked at, What their file names were, and much more! (And, in many cases, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.) MRU-Blaster Your computer keeps more secrets than the CIA--and its operatives are nearly as hard to find. MRU-Blaster roots out the hidden information that your PC is hiding from you. Some of these MRU (most recently used) files, such as temporary files, may not be doing anything worse than squatting on your territory. Others, like cookies, can invade your privacy. MRU-Blaster detects and deletes over 30,000 MRUs, leaving you with a cleaner and more private PC. Top of page Chat Programs To stop MSN Messenger from starting each time you start your computer. Click on your 'Start' button, then on 'Run' In the 'Run' box, type in msconfig and click ok. When the 'Microsoft Configuration Utility' opens, click on the 'Startup' tab at the top. Then look in the list for msnmsgr and uncheck the box, then click apply and ok. Choose 'Exit Without Restart' If MSN Messenger is open, ready to log on, click on 'Tools' then on 'Options' Then click on 'General' on the left, and uncheck both boxes in there. Close MSN Messenger and reboot. MSN Messenger will not start when your computer has rebooted. Top of page Stop AIM Instant Messenger from starting everytime you start your computer: When you install AIM: 'UNCHECK': Install Aol Exlporer & Aol Toolbar for IE (these are not needed and use unnecessary resources!) Leave any or all of the next 3 boxes checked (user preference) With AIM up on your monitor, click on 'Setup' at the bottom' On the left side, click on 'Sign On/Off Uncheck: 'Start AIM when Windows starts. (I only leave 'Save Password' checked there) Internet connection should be set to your connection. Uncheck the rest of the boxes. (click apply then ok to close preferences) The next time you reboot your computer, AIM will not start automatically! Top of page Weatherbug DO YOU NEED IT? NO YOU DO NOT!! Go here if you want your local weather after you've removed weatherbug: http://www.weather.com Please don't get me wrong here, Weatherbug is a nice/convenient way to find your local weather. BUT: This tiny program runs in the backgroundo on your computer stealing your bandwidth, slowing down your computer, browser speed, and memory. It installs automatically with AIM instant messenger if you aren't careful! To remove it: Simple: Go to Add/remove programs in your Control panel, find 'Weatherbug' and uninstall it. While you're in there, look for any 'Toolbars' and remove them too!! Reboot your computer. Top of page ARE WINDOWS MESSENGER AND MSN MESSENGER THE SAME? Yes and No (read on so you're not confused) For the 'Average computer user': NO... they are not the same. Disable Windows Messenger by following the steps in the next section. Install and use Msn Messenger for peer to peer chatting with friends and family. The average user has absolutely no need for the Windows Messenger Service, and thus it can safely be turned off. Windows XP users~ go to: Start All Programs Accessories Administrative Tools Computer Management Services & Applications Services. Double click "Messenger", and set the "Startup Type" to Disabled. You can also "Stop" the service at that same dialog. PLEASE DO NOT DISABLE ANYTHING ELSE WHILE IN THERE!! DISABLE THE WRONG THING AND YOU'LL DISABLE YOUR COMPUTER OR A VITAL SERVICE THAT WINDOWS NEEDS TO RUN PROPERLY!! For the network or 'advanced computer user': While Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger look very similar, they are, in fact, two separate applications. The good news is that either can be used to access the same .NET Messaging Service contacts. That's the default instant messaging service for both, and the one you'll use on the internet. What that really means is that if all you're doing is instant messaging your friends and family on the internet, it doesn't matter which one you use, and changing from one to the other is not a problem. Unfortunately, they are two different programs. They have slightly different feature sets, and release on different schedules. In particular, Windows Messenger is more tightly integrated with applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, or the Remote Assistance feature of Windows XP. The differences, and the confusion, don't end there, though. Microsoft has a Knowledgebase article that touches on more of the technical differences, and provides instructions for installing and running both on the same machine. The good news is that chances are, you'll never need to know how, or why, you would want to. (The above extracted from: Ask Leo) Top of page Miscellaneous
To send a large file to a friend (up to 1 gigabyte)Go here: http://www.yousendit.com/ Or here: http://www.dropload.com/ (up to 100 meg) Top of page To Clean your 'Cookies': There are a few ways to clean your cookies from your computer. I personally recommend Method #3 METHOD 1: Disk Cleanup: (Windows 98, 98SE, ME) Although Disk Cleanup (built into Windows) works It bearly scratches the surface when removing 'junk' files from your computer.
Temporary Internet Files are the cache of the Internet Explorer. This means that when you go to a web page with Internet so that if you later decide to open the same page again, it will open faster. Temporary Internet Files improve speed of web browsing Despite all these positive things about Temporary Internet Files, they have one big drawback: they compromise your privacy. Anyone with access to your computer can look into your Temporary Internet Files folder and see the sites that you have visited in the past. You can delete the contents of Temporary Internet Files folder easily by using Disk Cleaner Top of page To create new Quick Launch Toolbars: If you are always working from a specific folder: Drag any folder or any item from the desktop (e.g. My Computer,Recycle Bin, Network Neighborhood, Control Panel icon etc.) to the edge of the screen and release. To 'Scroll' the toolbar or see more files in it, click on the arrow at the very bottom To remove the toolbar, right click on the very outer edge of the toolbar, then left click on: 'Close Toolbar' Top of page Windows 98,98SE Always a Two-Pane Explorer Folder Windows -Open any folder (i.e. "My Computer"). -Choose "View/Folder options..." from the menu. -Move to the "File Types" tab. -Locate the "Folder" entry (to do this fast, click onto the Listview and type the word "folder"). -Choose Edit. -Select "Explorer", and finally -Press "Set as default", and leave the dialogs using Ok/Close.Now, whenever you open any sort of folder, may it be a drive/directory, the Control Panel or your Mobile Devices folder, you automatically get the two-paned Explorer view for easier navigation.
