It too will be a small booklet, but will contain many easy and safe tweaks to perform on any computer running Windows OS. Basically, it will be a 'computer maintainence book for 'dummies' (though I hate that word because there are no 'dummies'. There are only people that aren't 'computer literate') I'm willing to help change that and teach through this booklet.

How to Select Multiple files using the Ctrl Key
Let's say you open a file on your computer and you want to copy 10 files to another area, but there are 100 files in that one folder. What do you do? You can't use select all, because you don't want to move all 100 files. This is what you do, using the ctrl key and your mouse, you can select multiple files or deselect files. This is a very simple process. Here's what you do:
Click on the first file you want to move then go to the second file you want to select.. BEFORE clicking this file, hold down the ctrl key and then click. You'll notice that both files are now selected Repeat this process for as many files as you want to select at once If you accidentally select a file that you don't want included, just go back to it and hit it again while holding the ctrl button down. This way you deselect that one file. This little tip comes in handy when you're trying to organize you computer trying to move individual files around. Once the files are selected, right click over the highlited area, and a menu pops up, choose the option you want from that menu. It also works in programs like Photoshop, say you want to open a bunch of pictures at once, just do the above and hit okay. Your 'default' imaging program will usually open all the photos you selected. This tip also works on web pages with forms that allow you to pick multiple options.

How to Select Multiple files using the Shift Key
Now you want to copy 10 files to another area, but there are 100 files in that one folder. What do you do? You can't use select all, because you don't want to move all 100 files. This is what you do, using the 'shift' key you can select multiple files in sequence. This is a very simple process. Here's what you do: Click on the first file you want to move Go to the last file in sequence that you want to select.. BEFORE clicking this file, hold down the shift key and then click. You'll notice that all files between the first and last one are now selected Repeat this process for as many files as you want to select at once This little tip comes in handy when you're trying to organize you computer and you're moving multiple files from one folder to another.

Alphabetize your Start Menu

You have probably installed many programs since you bought your computer, So many in fact that if you go to try and find a program its actually becoming really hard because they're not alphabetized, New programs are on the end, or mixed in. This is a really quick, really easy tip to organize your start menu in Windows Here are the steps:
First click on the start button ~ Move your mouse to "Programs" or "All Programs" ~ Move your mouse to any of the folders there ~ Right Click your mouse. ~ A box will open up, scroll to "Sort By Names" and click ~ All the folders and programs will be alphabetized.
This is one of those simple but useful things that will help you organize your computer

How to change your Monitor's Screen Resolution:

This is a quick and easy tip.
Changing screen resolution is simple.
Screen resolution just deals with how much is shown on your monitor and how much space you have. So, lets say you go for a resolution of 1024 x 786 Pixels. Things will look a bit smaller, but you'll have more work area. If you have a screen resolution of 800 x 600 the icons will appear bigger and you'll have less space on your desktop. Screen resolution can be limited based on your video devices. Some monitor / adapters can't go higher than 800 x 600.Here is the steps:
Right click on an open area of your desktop, then left click on 'Properties' ~ The 'Display Properties' box pops up. Left click on the 'Settings' tab at the top. ~ Move to the slider that says Screen resolution. ~ Moving the slider to the right will make the screen resolution greater. ~ Moving it to the left will make it less. ~ Note you can also change the color quality in this box. (the higher the better) ~ Click okay, the screen resolution will change. ~ Windows will ask if you want to keep this resolution, click on 'OK'. ~ You are usually given 15 seconds to decide.
With older monitors, you are sometimes told that you have to reboot for the changes to take effect.
There you have it, your screen resolution is changed!
If you don't like the resolution, follow the same steps but change it back.

How To Avoid Spam or At Least Slow it Down
Do NOT respond to a spam.
The best response is to just delete the message. Do NOT use the unsubscribe link included in a spam. Almost every spam message you receive has a link in the email that says: 'Click here to unsubscribe'. Truth in advertising is not a concept that can be applied to spam.
DO NOT CLICK ON IT!! Do NOT visit the web sites linked to a spam.
It's a bad idea to visit any web site listed in a spam. Your visit may only be used to confirm your email address and make you the happy recipient of more junk. OR visiting one of these sites might load up your computer with "spyware". Some of which are often so badly written they can cause your other applications to crash or lock up your computer. Turn off HTML email viewing in your email program. This is the single best thing you can do to decrease the amount of spam. Spam looks to validated email addresses. A validated address is one where the spammer knows the owner is actually reading, or at least viewing, the junk.

The simplest way to verify an email address is to make the spam an HTML email with nice bright colors and pictures. The trick is that an HTML email is a web page and like a web page, the pictures get sent to you by a web server. Just viewing the email tells the web server where to send the picture, and also tells it your email address. This means that all you have to do is view an message in your email program for the spammer to know you've opened his message. This is so simple to do, so devious that it has become the most common method for spammers to use. The fix is to set your email program to never download HTML graphics. Always run antivirus software and keep it up-to-date. Some spam can download and install nasty programs on your computer. These programs are commonly called spyware.
(Remember that from those spam web sites mentioned above?)
What it's most likely to do is cause pop-ups whenever you go online.
If you are using a Windows-based computer, then you should be running antivirus software. Most antivirus software can detect the common varieties of spyware as it tries to sneak in through your junk email. Always run anti-spyware software and keep it up-to-date. There are programs that search out and destroy the spyware that might be on your computer. Three of the best ones are free for home use.
They are Windows Defender(for XP only SP2), Adaware and Spybot.
All three are regularly updated to detect the latest versions of spyware.
If you use Windows Defender, do not set Spybot S&D to run in the background
Using all three is a good idea though.
Adaware may be downloaded from:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
Spybot may be downloaded from:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10289035.html
Microsoft Windows Defender (beta 2)
(you must validate your copy of Windows XP before you can download)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Don't fill out online forms without understanding the site's privacy policies. It's always a good idea to do a little reading before you fill out the form. Look for the web site's privacy statement. Some companies have discovered that there's money to be made from selling the information collected from online forms. Selling customer contact information is a common practice. Unless the web site specifically says the collected information will never be shared or sold, leave the form blank. Don't post your email address online. Do you have your own web site? Perhaps you take part in online discussion groups or blogs. If so, did you put your email address on your web site? Is your email address online anywhere else? Try a simple experiment. Go to www.google.com and search for your email address. Did it show up? Spammers use Google, too, and other automated ways to search for email addresses. If at all possible, keep your email address off the web. Use anti-spam filtering. This sounds obvious, but many anti-spam filtering software is not that easy to set up and use on a daily basis. One easy-to-use solution is the built-in spam filters in your email program. Outlook, Mozilla Mail, Eudora Pro and Mac OS X Mail all have built-in filters that simplify blocking spam mail. You do have to spend some time "teaching" the filter the difference between what's spam and what's not, but the results are often quite impressive. Use an Internet Service Provider that blocks spam. Many ISPs do their best to block spam before it gets to you. Your ISP almost certainly hates spam more than you might think. That flood of junk that is a nuisance to you costs your ISP a considerable amount of money. Don't buy things advertised through spam. Change your email address. If your email address is contaminated by the spam and none of the steps above help, then it's time to get a new email address. Make sure you only give your new address to the people you want to receive mail from and follow the tactics above to keep it clean. Unfortunately, no one solution can block all the spam. Some junk will always ooze through. However, combining all the techniques above can reduce the flood to a more manageable trickle.

BCC Email forwarding
WILL EVERYONE READ & PLEASE DO THIS?

OR: (B)lind (C)arbon (C)opy
How to forward/send or reply to an email without all the addresses showing in it.
Click 'HERE' for a story about someone that DIDN'T send email 'BCC'
1) When you forward an email: DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message. That's right, delete them ... Highlight them and delete them .. backspace them. Whatever it is you know how to do!!
It only takes a second.
2) Whenever you send an e-mail: Don't use the "To:"or "CC:" columns for adding email addresses: Use the "BCC:" or "Blind Carbon Copy" column for sending the message. This way the people that you sendb to only see their own email address. If you don't see your "BCC:" option, click on where it says "To:" and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and click "BCC:". When you "select recipients" you can put the recipients in the"BCC" box instead of the "TO" box.
Also:
Remove any name or address in the 'TO' box and it will be recieved as: 'undisclosed recipient' Otherwise, if forwarded, it will have the person it was sent to originally in there when someone recieves it!
It's that easy-!!

Click on 'View' at the very top in the 'File Menu' bar. Now move your mouse to 'Toolbars'
The list of 'bars' that you see appear on the right. (uncheck the ones you don't want to appear or don't use)

If you have 'Toolbars' that you don't want,
go into 'Add/Remove programs' in your Control panel and uninstall them!
(run a spyware remover like AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, or Microsoft Windows Defender for XP

Choose which ones you want to remove from the bar, click on it in the right panel then click on the 'Remove' button in the middle and you will see it disappear from the 'Tool Bar'. Do this for each button you don't use or need.

The Microsoft Script Debugger lets you test scripts developed using an ActiveX script engine.
Plus you can debug scripts developed with VBScript and JScript,
as well as ActiveX components and Java applets.
It lets you view and modify program source code, variables, and values,
or control the flow and pace of how the script works. What does that mean to you?
Well, unless you are a programmer with nothing to do but fix script errors on someone else's web page,
then you probably want to shut this off.
Open Internet Explorer and click Tools/Internet Options then click the "Advanced" tab.
Under "Browsing", place a check next to "Disable script debugging".
Then confirm your new setting.
Now you can visit pages with poorly written scripts.
Your browser will load them to the best of its ability without asking you to fix the problem. Top of page Changing the text size on Web pages:
Do you find the text on most Web pages to be either too small or too large?
If so, you can easily change your Web browser's settings to display text in a more comfortable size.
Using Microsoft Internet Explorer, Click the "View" menu, select "Text Size," and choose your preferred size. Top of page THIS TIP WORKS ON ALMOST EVERY WEBPAGE !
Once you have a webpage open, try this:

Now, look above your 'Keypad' on the right side of your keyboard for the 'Numlock' key
If the light is on, press the 'NumLock' key to turn it off

Doing this well free up more space
AND defrag can organize your files and programs much better.
IF SCANDISK AND/OR DEFRAG WILL NOT FINISH:

DO THIS:

Sometimes Defrag appears to freeze at the 10 per cent mark.
If it does so, wait a bit longer...
Either a program that is running in the background is stopping Defrag..... OR
Your computer is figuring out how to best organize your files and will start running again in a few minutes.

IF DEFRAG DOES NOT CONTINUE:

Shut down your computer complete.
Turn the power on and start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard, or hold down your 'left' Ctrl key.
When the black option or choice screen comes up, choose the 'safe mode' option.
(This option stops windows from loading all it's drivers and all startup programs)

WINDOWS MELLINIUM EDITION USERS:
Your computer will go directly to System Restore
WAIT till the screen finishes loading and x out of it.
Then run Defrag in safe mode.
Defrag should run successfully Top of page MRU's, what they are and how to remove them:
M(ost)R(ecently)U(sed) lists contain information such as
the names and/or locations of the last files you have accessed.
They are located ALL OVER your registry, and for almost ANY file type.
By looking at these MRU lists, someone could determine what files you opened/saved/looked at,
What their file names were, and much more!
(And, in many cases, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.)
MRU-Blaster
Your computer keeps more secrets than the CIA--and its operatives are nearly as hard to find.
MRU-Blaster roots out the hidden information that your PC is hiding from you.
Some of these MRU
(most recently used) files, such as temporary files,
may not be doing anything worse than squatting on your territory.
Others, like cookies, can invade your privacy.
MRU-Blaster detects and deletes over 30,000 MRUs, leaving you with a cleaner and more private PC. Top of page Chat Programs To stop MSN Messenger from starting each time you start your computer.

Go here if you want your local weather after you've removed weatherbug: http://www.weather.com
Please don't get me wrong here, Weatherbug is a nice/convenient way to find your local weather.

This tiny program runs in the backgroundo on your computer stealing your bandwidth,
slowing down your computer, browser speed, and memory.
It installs automatically with AIM instant messenger if you aren't careful!

While you're in there, look for any 'Toolbars' and remove them too!!
Reboot your computer. Top of page ARE WINDOWS MESSENGER AND MSN MESSENGER THE SAME?
Yes and No (read on so you're not confused)
For the 'Average computer user':
NO... they are not the same.
Disable Windows Messenger by following the steps in the next section.
Install and use Msn Messenger for peer to peer chatting with friends and family.
The average user has absolutely no need for the Windows Messenger Service,
and thus it can safely be turned off.
Windows XP users~ go to:
Start
All Programs
Accessories
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Services & Applications
Services.
Double click "Messenger", and set the "Startup Type" to Disabled.
You can also "Stop" the service at that same dialog.
PLEASE DO NOT DISABLE ANYTHING ELSE WHILE IN THERE!!
DISABLE THE WRONG THING AND YOU'LL DISABLE YOUR COMPUTER
OR A VITAL SERVICE THAT WINDOWS NEEDS TO RUN PROPERLY!!
For the network or 'advanced computer user':
While Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger look very similar,
they are, in fact, two separate applications.
The good news is that either can be used to access the same .NET Messaging Service contacts.
That's the default instant messaging service for both, and the one you'll use on the internet.
What that really means is that if all you're doing is instant messaging your friends and family on the internet,
it doesn't matter which one you use, and changing from one to the other is not a problem.
Unfortunately, they are two different programs.
They have slightly different feature sets, and release on different schedules.
In particular, Windows Messenger is more tightly integrated with applications such as
Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express,
or the Remote Assistance feature of Windows XP.
The differences, and the confusion, don't end there, though.
Microsoft has a Knowledgebase article that touches on more of the technical differences,
and provides instructions for installing and running both on the same machine.
The good news is that chances are, you'll never need to know how, or why, you would want to.

This means that when you go to a web page with Internet so that if you later decide to
open the same page again, it will open faster.
Temporary Internet Files improve speed of web browsing
Despite all these positive things about Temporary Internet Files, they have one big drawback:
they compromise your privacy. Anyone with access to your computer can look into your
