Julia Ann "Pinky"
Brown Chaney b December 23,
1856; d c1940; 8 daughters, 2 sons
In 1908, Sadie Farbro identified Julia as
her mother and age 51. (see notes below) Click here for Julia's Brown ancestry.
The following was compiled by Paulann Canty, a great grand
daughter of Julia Brown Chaney as part of her history of John
Lucien Brown, Julia's father, which was published by the Craig
County OK Geneological Society:
- According to family tradition, it was near the end or
just after the close of the Civil War that John Brown's
wife, Sarah Jones died on route by wagon to Texas. She
was buried in an unmarked grave on the praire. Following
Sarah's death, John made arrangements for their daughter,
Julia Ann, to live with the Jim Price family in
Tahlequah. It was at the Price home that James McGilton
Chaney, a young telegraph operator making his way west
from Pennsylvania, first saw Julia. She was a beautiful
young girl with long black hair and blue/gray eyes. James
decided right then that he would marry Julia Brown, which
he did about 1874.
- John Brown helped Jim and Julia start farming in
neighboring Nowata County, where they remained respected
members of the community until Jim's death.
The Chaney's sons Charles Sr. and George
William both settled in Centralia. Charles
married Ella Rinker. They operated a grocery and creamery
in Centralia during her peak of activity.

Chaney's at 222 S Brown St, Vineta, OK, probably Thanksgiving
1938. (click for full size)
It's likely that Julia Ann Brown was 3/8 Cherokee by Blood in
that her father John Lucien Brown was probably 3/4 and her mother
was probably not Cherokee, at least she wasn't mentioned in any
of the applications for compensation. John Brown's father was
reported as a full Cherokee by blood or adoption before the
removal and his mother was reported to be half Cherokee in that
her mother was reported as Onai of the Bird Clan and her father
was Hamilton Conrad, half Dutch half Scot.
from "Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in US Court of
Claims 1906 - 1910": Application #19194 was by Julia Chaney
and included her 5 youngest children. She claims through her
father John Brown #531 Saline and her grandfather James Brown S.
B. #45. Her claim was supported by the following testimony:
- App #31787: My name is Sadie Farbro. My age is 36 years.
I live at Childers, this county. Was born and raised
there. I claim Cherokee Indian blood. I was enrolled in
1886 by the Dawes Commission, Roll #10848. My mother was
on the 1880 roll, #10495. I claim through my mother,
Julia Cheney, or Pinkey Cheney. My mother is 51 years
old. She gets her blood through her father John Brown;
Chewy is his indian name. He always lived in the nation
in Georgia. He was born in Georgia. He came when the
soldiers moved the Cherokees here in 1835-6. They never
associated with any other tribe of indians. My mother's
father had one sister and one half brother, Houston Benge
and Jennie Ross. Ross being her married name. I do not
know her maiden name. John Brown lived in the
Coo-wee-scoo-ee District, but in the early days lived in
Tahlequah. John Brown has been dead 25 years, maybe 29
years. Signed Sadie Barbro, Nowata, OK. Aug 25 1908.
- Misc Test P. 4081 by J.R. Price in behalf of Julia
Chaney: I am 63 years of age and live in Tahlequah, OK.
Julia Chaney lives at Coodys Bluff, OK. I know her. My
mother was a first cousin to the father of Julia Chaney.
She gets her indian blood through her father John Brown
who was living in 1851. I do now know if he drew money in
1851. He lived in Saline District at that time.
Chu-ee-e-qui (Big Chu-ee) was his indian name. Anderson
Benge was a half brother of John Brown and was living in
1851. Jim Brown was John Brown's father. Polly Brown was
a sister of John. I don't know the name of Jim Brown's
wife. I think John Brown was living with Lizzie or
Elizabeth Coody, who was an Old Settler. John at the time
was a Sheriff. They had children Arch, Charlie and Ellen.
There was also Hohn, Ocie, Joe and Quaity. The children,
Arch, Charlie and Ellen were Lizzie's children before she
married John Brown. (See Saline 531) Also S.B. 45. Signed
J.R. Price, Tahlequah, OK, Mar 29, 1909.
