Notes for SAMUEL LUCAS "LUKE" LOUGHRY:

Obituary:  [from surname files, HGSIC]:  "Indiana sustained a great shock on Friday morning when word flew along the streets that S.L. Loughry, junior member of the well-known firm of W.R. Loughry & Co. had been found dead in bed.  on Thanksgiving, just the day before, he had been on the streets and at the club, and in the afternoon had attended the football game at the Normal, and was apparently in good health.

A family dinner had been held at his home on Thanksgiving, where with his mother and sister, he entertained the families of his brothers William R. and James A.  He ate heartily and was in his usual cheery and pleasant mood.  in the evening, he retired at his usual hour, never to rise again.

On Friday morning his sister Mary was at his bed room door shortly after 7 and spoke to him.  She thought he moved and went down the stairs, remarking to her mother that she supposed he was unwell and wanted to remain in bed.

About 8:30 his mother went to his room and, receiving no answer when she addressed him, laid her hand on his forehead which she found to be cold.  She gave the alarm and it was found tha tLuke Loughry, known and respected by everybody in Indiana, was no more.  Physicians ascribe his death to heart disease from which he had suffered at intervals for some time.  He had been dead about four hours when his mother first discovered his condition.

When 11 years of age he went to work with Henry Hall then doing business in a little store on the Douglass property, Philadelphia Street.  He carried the papers and thus early in life laid the foundations of his future business success in making friends of all with whom he came in contact, both old and young.

After nearly three years with Mr. Hall, he entered the grocery and queensware store of A.M. Stewart in the building now occupied by Thomas Wheeler, next door to the Gazette building.  he remained in that establishment until the early part of 1874 when he entered the drug store of Dr. George R. Lewis.  He mastered the drug business, remaining with Dr. Lewis until March of 1880 when he entered the store of his brother W.R. Loughry and the firm became W.R. Loughry & Co.

Deceased was a charter member of the Cosmopolitan Club and had held numerous offices in that organization.  he became a Mason in 1877 and  Knight of Honor in 1878.  In this organization, he was insured to the amount of $2,000.  He also carried $3,000 in the New England Mutual.

In 1893, against his personal desire, he was elected to the town council to fill the place made vacant by the resignation of M.F. Jamison.  His friends insisted that he serve, which he did with credit to himself and iwth good results to the borough.  He was re-elected to that body for three years in 1895.

In the psring of this year, he was elected a trustee of the Indiana State Normal School, to represent the stock holders.  This election was regarded as a most propitious thing by friends of the school, but he had hardly got introduced in this work when death overtook him.

Funeral services were held at his late residence on North Sixth Street at 2 on Monday afternoon.  AT the head of the casket stood an immense floral piece sent in by the Cosmopolitan Club.  Other friends had sent in flowers in profusion. On top of the casket was a mass of white carnations and maiden hair ferns.

The service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Hall of the Presbyterian church, a strong and close friend of the deceased.

The pall bearers were Messrs. Griffith Ellis, Steele G. Hartman, Thomas E. Hildebrand, John W. Sutton, John A. Scott, Esq. and Postmaster J.N. Langham.  The Cosmopolitan Club, 40 strong, attended in a body and sent to Oakland cemetery where the remains were laid to rest.  The board of Normal School trustees was also in attendance.

Deceased was ninth in a family of ten children, all of whom are now dead but three, William R., Mary E., and James A.  The father, William Loughry, died September 1859 at the age of 48 years.  The mother is now in her 78th year."
