Joseph Nelson Loughry came to Tennessee in 1849 from Blairsville, Pennsylvania. I believe Joseph Nelson Loughry is a descendant of Jeremiah Lockery who immigrated to the United State from Derry County, Ireland around 1730. The following is my research on the Loughry family in Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

Joseph Nelson Loughry was born in Blairsville, PA on March 28, 1826. He was the son of Col. William Loughry and Mary Chambers Loughry. Joseph graduated from Washington College in 1848. Washington College is now Washington & Jefferson College located in Washington, PA. After graduation J.N. Loughry served as principal at Lascassas Academy in Rutherford County, TN. From 1850 - 1851 he attended Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. During this time he wrote several letters back to his fiancée Adriana A. Brown in Lascassas, TN. She was the daughter of John Brown, Jr. and Margaret Gilliam Brown. Following Joseph’s graduation from seminary he returned to Rutherford County, TN where he and Adriana were married on April 17, 1851. He was also licensed to preach in April 1851by the McMinnville Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was ordained by the same body one year later in April 1852. Joseph served as principal of Stones River Academy in Lascassas, TN from 1851 to 1854, President of Green River Female Academy in Elkton, KY from 1854 to 1858, and Magnolia Academy in TN in 1860. He also preached in the Lascassas Church from 1858 to 1863, Murfreesboro Church from 1863 to 1865, and Lascassas Church from 1865 to 1892. Joseph Nelson Loughry authored a book in 1888 titled "Christology". His wife Adriana A. Brown died on October 10, 1877. He remarried Susan C. Bethel daughter of Rev. Hugh Lansdon near Milton, TN in February 1880. Mrs. Susan Bethel Loughry died on Sept 6, 1891. Joseph Nelson Loughry died of Tuberculosis on his farm in Lascassas, TN on October 11, 1896.
