Miss Universe 2007: Let the Games Begin
In a few weeks, millions of viewers around the world will be watching the 2007 Miss Universe Pageant. It’s not really a big deal here in the states, but in some countries, people go crazy for pageants. Of course, I’ll be commenting on various aspects of the pageant over the next few weeks, and I’d like to start by writing about past, present, and future pageant powerhouses: Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, India, Mexico, Venezuela, and U.S.A.
Uma Blasini, Miss Puerto Rico 2007, has some very large shoes to fill. In fact, Zuleyka Rivera, last’s years Miss Puerto Rico, is the current Miss Universe. And Puerto Rican delegates always do well at international pageants. Well, I’m afraid Uma doesn’t stand a chance. It’s a shame because Puerto Rico usually sends amazing delegates. I guess this just isn’t their year.
Massiel Taveras, the delegate from the Dominican Republic, also comes from a country that has done very well over the years. Dominican Republic won the MU Crown in 2003, and their delegates have been impressing judges for the past few years. To be honest, I’m not that impressed with Massiel. However, some bloggers and pageant aficionados are crazy about this woman. She’s one to watch.
Puja Gupta represents India, and she is one of my favorite delegates. India is without question a pageant powerhouse. It’s interesting that Indian delegates haven’t been that successful these past few years; I’m not sure why. However, it’s never wise to underestimate this Asian powerhouse. I’m still not sure if she has what it takes to win the crown, but I’m cautiously optimistic.
Rosa Maria Ojeda is the delegate from Mexico, and she is a safe bet. She’s very pretty and she has an amazing body. She’s not as assertive as some of the other women, and she seems really inexperienced, which can be problematic. So, I don’t think she’ll win the crown, but anything is possible. Mexico has been doing very well for the past few years. And I think Rosa will go far (top 5, perhaps).
Ly Jonaitis, Miss Venezuela 2007, is the strongest delegate from Latin America. Venezuela is still considered a pageant powerhouse. However, Venezuelan delegates haven’t been doing very well for the past few years. Well, things are about to change. Ly is one of my favorite delegates. The Miss Venezuela organization got it right this time. I think she has what it takes to win.
Rachel Smith is the delegate from the U.S.A. And I’m not going to lie; Rachel is the clear favorite. The crown is hers for the taking. It’s not going to be easy, but if she follows the rules and doesn’t make any mistakes, I think she will be the next Miss Universe.
It’s really too early to be making predictions, but I’m just going with my gut feelings at this point in time. I’ll be writing more about these delegates within the next few days. Also, I’ve got my eye on Spain and Colombia. Let the games begin!

Maybe I'm just being nit-picky, but these girls entered themselves in a beauty pageant so I'm just gonna say it... I think Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic are pretty, but a little too "beer commercial pretty" for the crown.
I also think the USA and Venezuela will be top contenders this year.
I'm brazilian and routing for brazil.....but MISS NICARAGUA is Beautiful better then puerto rico, venezuela and mexico! I agree with the comment above NICARAGUA is bringing the heat. A lot of the contestants look like men too! Like El Salvador, and all of the asian countries have no chance as per usual. Go Brazil

Excuse me but Asia is the strongest team at miss universe. India, Korea, Phillipines and Japan are some of the best candidates.
India will shine this year and take the crown. And to the person who said that Asia dosent have a chance, think again almost all asian contestants are better than brazil!!!
I have a strong feeling that this year's Miss Universe will be from an Asian country. In fact, candidates from Asian countries are the strongest contenders.
I believe that each one of the lovely candidates are unique and special and unlike what these brazialians have said about Asian candidates, I'm going to give my best wishes for their candidates.

From the photos in the Miss Univ website (following the candidates), Miss Thailand just stands out in a number of PICs. If intelligence is included in the category, Miss Philippines being a Suma Cum Lauda ( and now pursuing a second degree in Law ) will definitely stand out. And she speaks English extremely well too!
If a number of judges come from South America, then this will become a Miss South America Universe 2007 competition!
delegates from brazil and other latin countries doesnt speaks english, to the one says that asian has no chance for the MU crown think twice, asian's delegates are more intelligent and beautiful than those from latin america and europe, all non english speaking delegates must not be place on top 20 or 15, i guess the next MU winner will be from asia.
India is gorgeous! She is the one asian that stands out. The strongest generally is Latin America. So I wont be suprise if Latins win agian. Im from france we have no chance. But there is no denying Latin beauty. Look at the canidates and history of miss universe. Over half of the winners were from latin countries. The should just name miss universe miss latin.

Miss Phillipines looks like a miss vietnam and ugly, and the reason why phillipinos are better then other asians because they have some spanish mix Which they are very lucky because they would be a ugly asian like the rest. Tiago, you speak as though Brazil hasn't been colonized by the west, Brazil doesn't even have its own language. Philippines indeed is a combination of various races (chinese, malay, japanese, spanish etc.) but that makes Philippines better. Although it cannot be that we are of a pure breed but i'm proud to say we've earned the right for the name Filipino. For the way of life we've developed is our own and is now known throughout the world.
Brazil is no better than the Philippines. You've won 2 miss universe title, so as Philippines. We've got the most number of most photogenic contestants and what have you got?

Miss Brazil 2007, Natália Guimarães, speaks English and Spanish besides Portuguese. Her remarkable beauty, grace and intelligence certainly put her on a very strong place to be crowned Miss Universe 2007.
What have we got hmmm.... first runner a total of 4 times when Philippines was not even placed. With a total of 11 top three. Oh ya Brazil is ranked 9 in GDP and world bank which equates to over 1.5 trillion dollars. Where the ranked 22 Philippines 400 billion. And in regards to the language variation and "not having a language" We do its Brazilian Portuguese which is diffrent from regular Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese has ameri-indian, spanish, and african infused thus giving brazilian portuguese. Same name diffrent language I would not expect you to know considering you are to busy being "photogenic" and all. And Latins set the foundation for photgenic look at art and fashion. Heavily influenced by latins. In fashion more than half of the models are from Latin countries mainly Brazil. We give Phillipines something to strive for. And as the comment above me states that Miss Brazil speaks 3 languages....its not only her over 95% of brazil speaks "Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, and Engish. These are pre requesets in our education system. Enabling us to be multi-linguist. So while phillipinos are trying to learn 1 language we are learining 3! And in Nicaragua they have developed a sign language in spanish and indegenous language the first in the WORLD . Making nicaragua having three languages. The inteligence in Latin America is strong, stronger then asia. Please be aware that foundation of science mathematics and architecture are led by latins. None exlemplify then the Aztecs and Mayans . Developing the number zero, our calendar we use today finding constulations and space demographics before any other civilization. The profeciency is undeniable. Miss phillipines i wish luck, considering the competion that the latins are bringing and have consistantly brought. She wont even reach our ankles.

Oh please tiago73, check your history. The number zero was conceived by the Hindus from India which is part of Asia. If you have studied geography, a lot of great civilizations were situated in Asia. Asia has been leading in science and technology at present(China, Japan, Singapore, Korea, etc.)A lot of foundations in Math and Science were already developed by the Chinese long before. There could have been more to Asian cultures if they were not destroyed by the conquistadors. If you think the Philippines is only learning 1 language, think again. The country has more than 7,000 islands and has over 70 major languages and countless dialects. So, it is but natural if you will hear 3-5 languages being spoken in one household. 95% of the people speaks FLUENT English. They say that the world has been influenced by the white people through media (Hollywood, television). Therefore, we can but expect that criteria for beauty will be based more on the features of the white, which is very close to the Latin American feature. Maybe if China, long ago, decided to invade Europe and won, the criteria for beauty may have been Asian. Don't you think so?

tiago, ur funny. don't you know that kids in the philippines, starting at the age of 3, already start learning english aside from the national language and the languages of the parents. if ur lucky, the mom and the dad also have their own different languages originating from their own provinces. sometimes the kid would know at least 4 languages (english, filipino, mom's language, and dad's language). when the kid goes to college, he is given an option to learn another foreign language. now you do the math. my grandmother alone, aside from english, filipino and spanish knows 5 more languages and they are spoken fluently. ur english in the university is like elementary english to us. what more, you can barely pronounce the words. i bet the reason why a lot of people are mad at you is due to the fact that you can hardly communicate using the english language. listen to yourself, you sound worse than hitler, our race is better than yours-BS.

LOL. now some Latino's in other blogs are complaining that the pageant was rigged because the panel of judges had 3 asians, even though majority of the panel were latinos.they kept saying that brazil had the best answer. japan, usa, and korea were the only ones who gave personalized answers. both brazil and venezuela gave safe and ideal answers. brazil should have responded that it may be ideal that the mind and the heart should be balanced, but as a latina, i live my life with passion and courage. she might have bagged the crown. well, it wasn't meant to be.

Hello honestly, none of the candidates seemed stunning. I myself am Filipina, and when I saw Miss Philippines, my first thoughts were that she looked like a bakla (gay) transvestite. Actually I've seen much prettier trannys. I knew she had to have brains to compensate for her looks. None of the contestants this year made me go wow. Venezuelans usually have stunning conetstants, thought at times they tend to choose ones that look like caballos (horses).

THE ISSUE HERE BEGAN WHEN TIAGO73 STARTED BRAGGING THAT LATINAS ARE WAY BEYOND ASIANS(phillipinos are better then other asians because they have some spanish mix Which they are very lucky because they would be a ugly asian like the rest. the fact is this, latinas are more beautifull than asians.why?,because latin countries for many years ranked to top even miss universe title but asians on the other hand are intelligent than latinas do.why? because asia is the center of industrialization so deal with it.
