Let’s Talk About Hung, Women in Bravo Land, And Project Runway (Top Chef 3; Finale)

Well, it finally ended. For some, Top Chef 3 turned out to be a real bore; while others fell in love with this season’s well-behaved cast. I suspect Casey will win the fan favorite award. The lovely Texan has gained quite a following throughout the blogosphere. Now, let’s discuss the finale.

First, let me just say that I was very pleased with the finale. Bravo got it right. Rocco DiSpirito, Michelle Bernstein, and Todd English were recruited to serve as sous chefs, adding some excitement to the mix. Casey, Dale, and Hung were noticeably shocked and excited about the opportunity of working with these culinary experts. I don’t care what anyone says, I think Rocco is a cuttie.

The cheftestants were asked to create a three-course meal. The day before the actual serving, the cheftestants and their amazing sous chefs spent hours preparing for the big day. Ah, but things got interesting when Tom delivered some very bad news a few hours before show time—the chefs were asked to prepare a fourth dish. Hung didn’t seem affected by the news; he was there to win no matter what.

As the judges feasted and scrutinized each and every dish, I experienced déjà vu. Images of the Shear Genius finalists, Daisy, Ben, and Anthony, were dancing around in my mind. Like Daisy, Casey seemed unstoppable during the last few weeks of the show, but her luck ran out in the finale. What happened? Maybe soul is a finite commodity that one should use judiciously. Did Casey use it all up during the last few episodes, leading up to the finale? I have no idea. I think she just lost control of Howie and the situation. And she didn’t seem to work well under pressure. Dale once used the word miraculous to describe his team’s success during the second part of the Restaurant Wars challenge. And that word can be used to describe his impressive success on the show. He, like Ben before him, owed everything to lady luck. I acknowledge that Dale made some very impressive dishes, but his lack of consistency was, to borrow a phrase from Anthony Bourdain, his major malfunction.

When Padma called out Hung’s name, I was more than pleased. Yes, I thought to myself, Top Chef is all about the food. From the beginning, it was clear that Hung was Top Chef material. His victory just seemed fair. Of course, some Dale supporters weren’t too happy with the results, and they’d probably disagree with me. But, in all honesty, one of his dishes was a total disaster. I commend him for not holding anything back. On a positive note, he rediscovered his inner chef.

This season of Top Chef was far from perfect. With the exception of Howie and Dale, most of the cheftestants were not very entertaining. And, as we all know, that’s what drives most reality television programs. There are other issue that I won't go into here. Interestingly, Hung tried his very best to be perceived as the show’s asshole, but he failed miserably. Seriously, he was quite harmless, but he was fun to watch. I have to say that Gail and Ted were great on the show. Ted didn’t really contribute much during the finale, but I still love him. And I love Gail, too.

Ok, I know this will probably annoy the hell out of some people, but I just can’t stop thinking about the lack of female talent on this and other Bravo reality television competition shows. However, there is hope. And I’m talking about Project Runway, the greatest of all Bravo reality shows. PR’s Chloe is the only female Bravo reality show winner to date. And even though Kara and Uli didn’t win in their respective seasons, they both did a phenomenal job. So, I may bitch about the sad state of affairs for women in Bravo land, but I can’t overlook the success of female contestants on PR. And thank goodness for that. I’m really looking forward to the new season of PR.

Amen to this post. I am over Top Chef 3 and have not written a post this weekend. Let's just say that looking at the three male winners in the past three seasons makes me sick. Sick. SICK.

I have been pining for the next season of PR. I feel that my blogging mojo has been sucked dry by the long wait.

Top Chef S3 never engaged me. The first season was AWESOME, but they have never been able to recreate the Tiffany/Dave or Stephen/everybody else magic that season 1 held for me. Marcel's self-confidence paled to that of Paddy and Stephen of first season IMHO. And sweet as Betty seemed at first, her shrillness put her out of league with Leanne of S1.

Why no mention of the S3 pack? Because they didn't stand out to me really. I know, the show is supposed to be all about the food. But I can't taste the food through my tv. So spent an hour of each S3 episode watching a show about food I couldn't taste. I couldn't argue with the judges because they were the ones who had to taste the stuff. Who was I to argue?

The drama of seasons 1 and 2 forced people to take sides. You ended up rooting for contestants. You may have never tasted a morsel they prepared but you wanted them to kick the other contestants' asses!

It was good reality tv. This past season just made me wish for a reality tv series I could participate in like PR. At least with PR, no matter how low the drama factor, you can judge for yourself which entry has your vote. You can get behind someone because you can fully appreciate what they produce. The drama just ends up being a bonus!

Let's just hope the next month flies by :)

Don't forget "Bad Momma" Laura was a finalist in PR too.

bravo's got girl problems. today i saw an ad for PR4 for the first time: one of the voice-over contestant quotes is: "I'm a girl, I'm emotional" or something to that effect.

I groaned.

The LAST thing Bravo needs is to reinforce tired old stereotypes about "girls."
I don't care if the woman in question said this herself; Bravo chose to edit it into their promo. They've got real problems with the way they select their female contestants, and I'm a little pissy about this. The fact that Padma is on Top Chef at all, as eye candy, is pretty shoddy. And the contestants?

Well, again: where's the female version of Howie, or Joey? Where's the female version of strange Vincent from PR? Where are the plump, pudgy or even fat women? They exist, you know, and often are just as talented as anyone else.

between Bravo and Queer as Folk, I'm starting to have a paranoid belief in the feminist queer critics who say that "all homosexual men, by definition, are misogynist."

CB I don't think gay men are misogynists. I just think that some gay men don't "get" certain types of women in the way that they don't entirely "get" straight men.

I don't think gay men necessarily expect women to be interested being glamorously fabulous. I think they just have a hard time understanding why a woman wouldn't be interested in those things if she had the choice.

I have very few less-than-effeminate women as friends. Most of my friends want to be gorgeous and pampered. I have nothing against super-independent women who are gruff and aggressive, I just have nothing in common with them and don't have any as friends.

And I'm not a misogynist.

I loved this season of Top Chef. Personally, I don't take this as a man/woman thing. It was obvious that Casey couldn't win this round and she shouldn't have.

I was horrified when I heard that "I'm a girl, I'm emotional" too...

Even so, I love Project Runway and I'm greatly looking forward to it.

I hear ya, Ms. Place. And I really hope TC 4 does a better job of recruiting talented female chefs.

Jinxy, yeah, I also had issues with TC season 3. And, like you, I'm looking forward to Project Runway. Last season offered two very talented women.

Anon, yes, I forgot to mention Laura. She rocked as a finalist in season 3.

Cb, Bravo does have a serious girl problem. You know, I do think some gay men may be a tad misogynistic, but most are not. And I agree with Jinxy; some gay men don't "get" certain women. But I do agree with you 100% about Bravo selecting women on the basis of looks. There’s clearly a double standard.

Majikgodss, glad to hear you enjoyed TC 3. I enjoyed writing about it, and I was more than satisfied with the finale. And I agree with you and Cb; Bravo really needs to stop promoting tired and old stereotypes.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.
