Perhaps they later moved to Big Greenbrier. Sometime 2 CONT between 1870 and 1871, Charlotte must have died, because Andrew remarried 2 CONT on July 20, 1872 and had a child by his second wife Mary Ann (Whaley) in 2 CONT 1873. Mary Ann was the daughter of Perry Whaley who in 1870 was living 2 CONT in Big Greenbrier. According to oral history passed down by the Whaley 2 CONT side of the family, Andrew and Mary Ann died close together around 1896 2 CONT "when Andrew, Jr. was 4" and "they died of TB" which was common in those 2 CONT days. The children of Andrew and Mary Ann were taken in as orphans by 2 CONT other families in Sevier County. The older boys by the first wife went 2 CONT back to Kentucky, except Simeon, who remained in Sevier County. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew served on the Union side in the Civil War, #973577 Co. E 32nd Ky 2 CONT Infantry. In 1890, Andrew applied for a war pension, but it was denied. 2 CONT Officials claim that he deserted, but he said that he completed his 2 CONT enlistment. In 1891, he appealed, but lost again. 2 CONT 2 CONT It may be significant that Andrew moved from the Wolf Creek community in 2 CONT Kentucky to Sevier County, Tennessee by the summer of 1870, around the 2 CONT same time that his father Daniel moved from Wolf Creek to the Marsh Creek 2 CONT community (now in McCreary County, Kentucky) by August 1870 (Bethel 2 CONT Church records). It may have had something to do with lingering Civil 2 CONT War tensions. 2 CONT 2 CONT Neither Andrew, Charlotte, nor Mary Ann have marked graves in Sevier 2 CONT County. By the time of Andrew's death, the male children by his first 2 CONT wife were grown and had gone back to Kentucky, except for Simeon. If 2 CONT Andrew and Mary Ann indeed had died of TB, then the local people would 2 CONT have hastened their burial, and with no kin around that can explain the 2 CONT lack of a headstone. 2 CONT 2 CONT So far as this writer knows, Andrew was the first permanent Davenport 2 CONT resident of Sevier County, and is the ancestor via the second family of 2 CONT all the Davenports at Seymour, Tennessee and many of those at South 2 CONT Knoxville, Tennessee. His son Simeon by his first wife is the ancestor 2 CONT of the Davenports who lived around Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, 2 CONT Tennessee. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew was probably prompted to move from Whitley County, Kentucky 2 CONT because of Civil War conflicts with his surrounding community. He may 2 CONT have been prompted to move to the Big Greenbrier area of Sevier County, 2 CONT Tennessee because he may have had preceding relatives there. A John 2 CONT Davenport was one of the earliest settlers of that area, but I cannot tie 2 CONT him to Andrew. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew's father Daniel moved out of Whitley County into McCreary County 2 CONT in August 1870, not long after Andrew left for Tennessee. All of the children in the 1850 census were old enough to 2 CONT have left home by 1860 if the earlier census was, in fact, started in 2 CONT 1848. 2 CONT 2 CONT Zechariah died October 15, 1856 in Whitley County, Kentucky, age 82 2 CONT years, 4 months, 9 days (stated in Kentucky death records, available for 2 CONT that period]. 2 CONT 2 CONT Zechariah's burial place is not known. It is probably Wolf Creek 2 CONT Cemetery, where all but one of his children are, but there is no marked 2 CONT headstone. This author has examined a headstone survey for all of the 2 CONT cemeteries in Whitley County, and Zechariah is not listed. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wife Jane Douglass was born between 1760 and 1770 (Kentucky census), 2 CONT place unknown, probably Virginia. Died July 6, 1833; buried in Wolf 2 CONT Creek Cemetery in Whitley County, Kentucky (marked headstone). 2 CONT 2 CONT Odd fact: Although Zechariah had significant land holdings and a family, 2 CONT the Minutes of the Whitley County Court for 1818-1821 show that he was 2 CONT arrested, tried, and convicted of "vagrancy." The penalty was that the 2 CONT sheriff was to "hire" him for seven months. This meant that he was to be 2 CONT hired out as a laborer to others in the community. This, along with the 2 CONT fact that in the 1840 census he was living with a younger woman and her 2 CONT children, indicates that Zechariah may have been estranged from his own 2 CONT family. 2 CONT 2 CONT PROBABLE FACTS 2 CONT 2 CONT Probable first marriage to Precilla Sprouill on March 1, 1794 in Tyrrell 2 CONT County, North Carolina (stated in the North Carolina marriage records for 2 CONT Tyrrell County). However, it is not certain that this is the same 2 CONT Zechariah as in Kentucky, later. There is no other Zechariah of the right 2 CONT age in any old records of the time for the region VA-NC-KY known to the 2 CONT author. This Zechariah did not set up a household in North Carolina, 2 CONT because he did not appear in subsequent censuses. However, a Zachariah 2 CONT Davenport owned land in Washington County, North Carolina in 1815 (tax 2 CONT lists). Precilla's burial place is unknown to this author. 2 CONT 2 CONT Probable child by Precilla: Joanna Davenport, born October 18, 1793, 2 CONT died August 1843, buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery. Headstone is 2 CONT indistinct: says Joanna Davenport, born October 18, 189? (sic), died 2 CONT August ??, 1843, "49 yrs 299 days". Joanna probably never married. The 2 CONT name Joanna probably comes from Zechariah's (probable) mother, Joanna 2 CONT Garrett (see below). These figures reconcile nicely if Joanna's birth 2 CONT year is 1793, when Zechariah was 19 years of age. Johannah is a common 2 CONT name in the Davenport and allied families going back into the 1600s in 2 CONT Tyrrell County. 2 CONT 2 CONT If Joanna Davenport was Zechariah's child, she did not live in his 2 CONT household. Possibly, she was raised by one of his siblings or by 2 CONT Precilla Sprouill's family. Remember that Zachariah may have continued 2 CONT to own property in Tyrrell County, in absentia, which could be the means 2 CONT of supporting the child Joanna. In the Tyrrell County census of 1820, a 2 CONT Joanna Davenport appears as head of household for the first time, with 2 CONT age 26-46 (she would have been just over 26) and does not appear 2 CONT thereafter. If the hypothesis is correct, she moved to Kentucky to be 2 CONT near her father, and died there in 1843. 2 CONT 2 CONT Zechariah's parents, as stated on his death record, were Jacob and 2 CONT Elizabeth Davenport. A Jacob Davenport of about the right age married 2 CONT (1) Joanna Garrett on February 1, 1768 in Tyrrell County (North Carolina 2 CONT marriage records). If this is Zechariah's father, then his mother's name 2 CONT was Joanna. Jacob married (2) Elizabeth Duncan on February 17, 1779 in 2 CONT Tyrrell County (North Carolina marriage records). There is no proof that 2 CONT these two marriage records refer to the same Jacob Davenport, but the 2 CONT fact that Zechariah named his (probable) first child Joanna, yet his 2 CONT death record lists his parents as Jacob and Elizabeth Davenport, is very 2 CONT suggestive. Zechariah would have been raised from age 5 by Elizabeth, 2 CONT and probably could scarcely remember Joanna. Perhaps Jacob's first wife 2 CONT died, which was not uncommon. Moreover, Zechariah named two of his 2 CONT children Jacob and Elizabeth. Confounding this hypothesis is the fact 2 CONT that there were at least three Jacob Davenports in Tyrrell County in the 2 CONT late 1700s. In a court action of 17 Sep 1765, John Davenport was stated 2 CONT to have a son Jacob. In Richard Davenport's will of 22 Nov 1773, he was 2 CONT stated to have a son Jacob. One of these is "our" Jacob. In the Tyrrell 2 CONT County tax list of 1784, there was a Jacob Davenport, Sr. and a Jacob 2 CONT Davenport, Jr. in separate households. The two Jacob Davenport 2 CONT marriages could merely refer to any of the three Jacobs. 2 CONT 2 CONT If Zechariah is buried at Wolf Creek, one explanation for why he does not 2 CONT have a headstone is community division over the issues that would 2 CONT eventually erupt as the Civil War. Some of Zechariah's sons and nephews 2 CONT spent some time in Arkansas in the 1840s and 1850s, because they had 2 CONT children that are listed as born in Arkansas. Kentucky was bitterly 2 CONT divided, and moving to Arkansas-Missouri territory was one way to escape 2 CONT the conflict and be on the Union side. Moreover, it is known that many 2 CONT headstones in cemeteries all over the South were removed or defaced 2 CONT because of their owner's political views. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Mormon FamilySearch International Genealogical Record (IGI) Film 2 CONT Number 903571 claims that Jacob was born "ABT 1737" and his father was 2 CONT Richard. The same record claims that Zachariah was born June 6, 1774, 2 CONT with parents Jacob Davenport and Johannah Garrett. FamilySearch 2 CONT Ancestral File record AFN 11BW-B20 claims that William Davenport was born 2 CONT "ABT 1799" in Whitley Co., KY, with parents Zachariah Davenport [AFN 2 CONT 11BW-B0K] and Precilla Spruill [AFN 11BW-B1R]. However, William was 2 CONT actually born on May 31, 1800 (from his headstone] in Kentucky [from the 2 CONT census], and Zechariah had already married Jane Douglass by that time 2 CONT [from the Washington County, VA marriage records]. 2 CONT 2 CONT In roughly the same time frame as the above Zachariah, there was a 2 CONT Zachariah Davenport in the Pendleton District in South Carolina, who 2 CONT moved to Missouri. There is no overlap or confusion in their respective 2 CONT records. He is probably related to James, Francis, and Joseph Davenport 2 CONT who were Revolutionary War soldiers from South Carolina. West of the present-day bridge across to Edenton, there is a 2 CONT small settlement on the Sound named Mackeys. According to Betty Pledger 2 CONT Spruill of the Washington County Genealogical Society, "Mackey's Ferry" 2 CONT and "Mackeys" refer to the same small settlement. The 1786 census shows 2 CONT Jacob Davenport living in an area "at the head of the Scuppernong." 2 CONT Joseph Phelps, Sr's will, July 21, 1787, states that a Jacob Davenport 2 CONT lived adjacent to the Phelps clan near Phelps Lake. This would be in east 2 CONT central Washington County, near Creswell and the Tyrrell County line, 2 CONT largely surrounded by swampland, and the easiest way by land out of the 2 CONT area would have been toward Mackeys. The modern-day road follows this 2 CONT path. There is an old road that runs from near Colonial Beach on the 2 CONT Sound, in the east, to Mackeys in the west, that is named Davenport 2 CONT Road. The Davenports always had much interaction with the Spruills, such 2 CONT as marriages and land sales, and the earliest Spruill on the South Shore 2 CONT was Dr. Godfrey Spruill in 1695, who set up a plantation near present-day 2 CONT Colonial Beach. A large population of Spruill descendants built up in 2 CONT that local area. It is likely that the earliest Davenports lived just 2 CONT inland, south of the Spruill enclave on the Bay. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the first edition of this family history, I reported that another 2 CONT individual had found a will for Jacob Davenport in Washington County, NC 2 CONT and it named Zechariah as one of his sons. In a visit to Washington 2 CONT County on November 16-23, 1997, I was unable to verify this claim. This is the largest grant known to 2 CONT this author in Sevier County. It is not clear to this author upon what 2 CONT basis the grants were made. Perhaps it was because his father had 2 CONT participated in the Revolutionary War. The land was bounded by the East 2 CONT Prong of the Pigeon River, Webb's Creek, the Cocke/Sevier County line, 2 CONT and a line well up on the slope of the Western escarpment of the Smoky 2 CONT Mountains. Shortly after 1870, Alexander Preston moved to Grainger 2 CONT County where the farm land was much better and where some of his 2 CONT offspring lived. From historical documents, he had difficulty in selling 2 CONT all of his Sevier County land. William Williams (1843-1921) bought 600 2 CONT acres from him at one dollar per acre. The sales receipt, which my 2 CONT mother, Mamie Williams Davenport (1911-), had in her possession in the 2 CONT 1970s was a simple statement of the acreage and selling price, 2 CONT handwritten on simple ruled notepad paper. Records from Montgomery County and 2 CONT Grayson County, Virginia, prove that Sampson's parents were Peter Rauhuff 2 CONT and Lovis Sage Rauhuff. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sampson apparently married a native Indian woman (more on this below) and 2 CONT had at least six children: Samuel (b. 1825-1830), another son (b. 2 CONT 1830-1835), Sarah Narcissus (b. 1833), Selena M. (b. August 11, 1836), 2 CONT Caroline (b. 1830-1835), and Elizabeth (b. 1835-1840). The family lived in Civil District 5, Sevier County 2 CONT (Pigeon Forge). 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the girls may have been named Mary, because the Boyd's Creek 2 CONT Cemetery has a Mary Rowhoff, born March 8, 1828, died September 3, 1859. 2 CONT If so, she is named after her mother Polly, which name is a common 2 CONT nickname for "Mary". Although the dates don't quite match with the 1840 2 CONT census, errors of this type were often made. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1832, Sampson Rowhough joined the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist 2 CONT Church in Sevierville, Tennessee, one of the old-line, principal churches 2 CONT of the area. In 1833, Polly Rowhough was also admitted to membership. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1836, Sampson has moved to Knox County, Tennessee, just to the west of 2 CONT Sevier County, with the family as described in the household. He must 2 CONT have bought land, because he appears on the Knox County tax list of 1836. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1840, Sampson appeared in the Knox County, Tennessee census as 2 CONT follows: Males 01101, Females 220001 [Key: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 2 CONT 20-30, 30-40] 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1850, Sampson does not appear in any Tennessee census. Bradford 2 CONT Rauhuff states that he moved to Missouri. 2 CONT 2 CONT James Pinckney Rauhuff (b. March 1, 1862, d. February 7, 1947), a son of 2 CONT Selena M. Rauhuff, was kept the last two years of his life in the home of 2 CONT M. Ada Davenport Sharp and Paul Sharp. He was a great uncle once removed 2 CONT of Ada, and was affectionately referred to as "Uncle Pink". He probably 2 CONT talked about his family a great deal, but only the following bare facts 2 CONT could be recalled by Ada: Narcissus, Selena, and their older brother as 2 CONT teenagers (before 1851) came to Sevier County from Norman, Oklahoma, by 2 CONT themselves, in a wagon. [This is revealing, because the American Indians 2 CONT had been removed from East Tennesse to Oklahoma in 1838. Possibly, they 2 CONT had moved to Missouri with their father, visited their kin in Oklahoma, 2 CONT and returned to Sevier County. - Ed.] Back in Sevier County, looking for 2 CONT any place to stay, they settled for a time on the farm of William H. 2 CONT Cannon, who was old (about 80) at the time, in the Boyd's Creek 2 CONT community. William H. Rauhuff was the offspring of Narcissus and William 2 CONT H. Cannon. These statements were substantially corroborated by Mary 2 CONT Miranda Rauhuff Davenport, Ada's mother and a niece of Uncle Pink. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1850, William H. Cannon was keeping William H., Jr. and his wife 2 CONT Mary. No children were present. The census does not indicate Sampson 2 CONT Rauhuff's whereabouts, nor any of his children. If Sarah Narcissus and 2 CONT Selena were on William Cannon's farm, they simply were not counted. In 2 CONT 1860, William H. was keeping only William H., Jr., and James Wade, County 2 CONT Trustee, age 25. No women or children were indicated. Both of William 2 CONT H., Jr's wives were deceased. William, Jr. is listed as "merchant." 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1851, Narcissa, "a woman of color", joined the Forks of The Little 2 CONT Pigeon Baptist Church (FLPBC) in Sevierville. (Recall that Sampson and 2 CONT Polly, Narcissus' probable parents, were members at FLPBC when Narcissus 2 CONT would have been a child). Selena M. is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in 2 CONT Pigeon Forge, which was then associated with another of the principal 2 CONT churches in the area. Sarah Narcissus' burial place is not known, and is 2 CONT not listed in a comprehensive survey of Sevier County cemeteries. 2 CONT 2 CONT After 1850, Selena and Narcissus moved to Civil District 5 (Pigeon Forge) 2 CONT of Sevier County into a household with just themselves and their 2 CONT children, where they appear in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Their 2 CONT vocation in 1860 is listed as "hireland", which is to say "field hand". 2 CONT Narcissus had two children, and Selena had four. It appears that they 2 CONT named the boys after their consorts, who were themselves upright members 2 CONT of the community. For example, James Pinckney Rauhuff was named after 2 CONT James B. Seaton, the postmaster; William H. Rauhuff was named after 2 CONT William H. Cannon, a prominent farmer; and James Leon Rauhuff was named 2 CONT after James Leon Clabough, a store owner. 2 CONT 2 CONT Selena's daughter Priscilla was listed as "attending school" in the 1870 2 CONT census. This is significant because there were only a very few children 2 CONT in the entire county who were attending school at that time. The few 2 CONT schools were called "academies," and tuition had to be paid by the 2 CONT parents. 2 CONT 2 CONT Among the mementos left to Ada Sharp by Uncle Pink was a pencil portrait 2 CONT of a teenage grandson and granddaughter of Selena Rauhuff. This was 2 CONT viewed by Clyde McCall Davenport sometime around 1979. The two subjects 2 CONT were the children of one of the two daughters of Selena; time has erased 2 CONT the recall of which it was, but it had to be Rebecca (Priscilla had no 2 CONT daughters). Either way, the portrait was very revealing, because it 2 CONT showed two strong, healthy, handsome, obviously Indian faces. They 2 CONT looked much like Japanese athletes! The artist captured a kind of a 2 CONT glint to their expressions, as if to say "Don't mess with me". Moreover, 2 CONT several old photos exist of Uncle Pink, and he had the jet black hair and 2 CONT high cheekbones of an American Indian. 2 CONT 2 CONT After the death of Ada Sharp, Clyde McCall Davenport approached her 2 CONT husband, Paul Sharp, about making a copy or photo of the portrait. 2 CONT Unfortunately, he could not find it. 2 CONT 2 CONT To review the facts, Sampson moved to Knox County by 1836. Sometime 2 CONT before 1856, two teenaged girls named Rauhuff, along with an older 2 CONT brother, came to Sevier County from Norman, Oklahoma, where the Indians 2 CONT had been taken. They are not taken in by any family in the community, 2 CONT but are apparently left to fend for themselves. Presumably, they must 2 CONT have been different in some way, as a person of Indian heritage would 2 CONT have been. Some of their children and their grandchildren exhibited 2 CONT strong Indian features. This is the largest grant 2 CONT known to this author in Sevier County. It is not clear to this author 2 CONT upon what basis the grants were made. Perhaps it was because his 2 CONT grandfather had participated in the Revolutionary War and his father in 2 CONT the War of 1812. The land was bounded by the East Prong of the Pigeon 2 CONT River, Webb's Creek, the Cocke/Sevier County line, and a line well up on 2 CONT the slope of the Western escarpment of the Smoky Mountains. Shortly 2 CONT after 1870, Alexander Preston moved to Grainger County where the farm 2 CONT land was much better and where some of his offspring lived. From 2 CONT historical documents, he had difficulty in selling all of his Sevier 2 CONT County land. William Williams (1843-1917) bought 600 acres from him at 2 CONT one dollar per acre. The sales receipt, which my mother, Mamie Williams 2 CONT Davenport (1911-), had in her possession in the 1970s was a simple 2 CONT statement of the acreage and selling price, handwritten on simple ruled 2 CONT notepad paper. The Williams acreage was on the East side of the Shults 2 CONT land grant, bounded by the original line on the mountain, the 2 CONT Cocke/Sevier county line, Dunn's Creek, and a line well down into Rocky 2 CONT Flats.
