Rafting the

Mendenhall River

in Juneau, Alaska

Alaska Travel Adventures offers this 3.5 hour rafting trip, beginning at Mendenhall Lake, just across the lake from Mendenhall Glacier seen above. We floated the lake for 1/2 mile, passing a few small icebergs, and then headed down the Mendenhall River.

The first mile or so enjoyed rough water, though I doubt the rapids were big enough to be the advertised class III rapids, and the final four or so miles were a leisurely float through wooded areas and eventually residential areas. Wet water gear (tops and pants and boots) were available and a sausage-cheese lunch was provided after the trip. The price in 2004 was $99, the highest price of the Alaska raft trips I took.

This is the photo the raft company took from an overlook at one of the better rapids.
