- Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area in southwest Virginia
covers 140,000 acres of the Jefferson National Forest's 714,000 acres,
including Mt. Rogers, Virginia's highest peak at 5729 feet above sea level.
Among its 430+ miles of trails is 78 miles of the famous Appalachian Trail,
and three wilderness areas are included within its boundaries. Trails are
marked as to permissible uses -- foot, horse, and/or bicycle. The 80 mile
Virginia Highlands Horse Trail traverses most of its length, and several
special horse campgrounds cater to equestrians. Bikers can enjoy the Virginia Creeper Trail and the New
River Trail, photos of and info about which are available on my site.
