PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS
STATE PARK

return to Porkies description

This is Mirror Lake in the interior of the wilderness park, a favorite location for the resident black bears. Some members of a boy scout troop fed a bear one Kudos bar, and the animal followed them for 6 miles to their car, apparently hoping for more goodies. Of course, we were camped below the parking area, and the bear spent the entire night trying to get our bear-bagged food bag down from the tree. It failed to get the food, but did manage to keep us up most of the night. Every 45 minutes or so it returned to our tent and sniffed around it. In case you have no first hand experience, take it from me: Bears have extremely bad breath!

A view from a high point on the trail, looking down at the river which forms the magnificent Lake of the Clouds.
