THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS
NATIONAL PARK

return to Smokies description

Along the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies. At places it is several feet wide, but often it is merely an 18 inch treadway with lush foliage (at times it is like a rainforest here) overhanging the trail.

Big Creek in the area around Walnut Bottoms Campground. Bears abound in this area. Two 15 foot high poles are provided to hang packs, and a metal food box is also provided to keep the critters honest, but still they come looking for food. And one of the poles has a huge s-shaped bend in it about halfway up -- how did it get there?

Sterling Mountain Trail heading to the Appalachian Trail at Tri-Corner Knob. This is the trail where we encountered the biting spiders which spin single web threads across the trail, and when a hiker breaks the thread, the spider swings onto the hiker's body and bites. We solved the problem by having the lead hiker carry a stick vertically in front of his body, breaking the strands.
