1. Thomas Sherar Esquire, son of Robert Sherar and Mary Moreson, was born in 1745 in Scotland, was christened on 29 Apr 1746, died on 16 Jan 1830 in Paspebiac, Cox Township, Quebec, Canada at age 85, and was buried on 19 Jan 1830 in Cox Township, Quebec, Canada.

General Notes: Thomas Sherar emmigrated from Scotland to Tryon Co, NY in 1774 with his wife and two children. Once there, he obtained a 200 acre plot of land from Goldsbrow Banyar "on lease forever" in Tyron County at the Head of the Delaware River on the West Branch of the Delaware River. His terms were freedom from rent for 8 years and then 6d sterling per acre thereafter annually.

Tyron County was the site of many skirmishes in the years leading up to the American Revolution but the Sherar farm was some 30 miles from nearby settlements and so he escaped many of these problems. In 1779, however, the farm was destroyed by nearby Iroquois. It is not clear if they Sherars fled to Canada for protection or were taken there as prisoners. The family is listed as receiving provision in the District of Montreal from 25 July 1779 to 24 Aug 1779, inclusive. Eventually, the British determined that in order to keep providing supplies to the families, all able men 13 and older must join the military. For this reason, Thomas Sherar and his son James both were attached to "Jessup's Corps" or the "Loyalist Rangers", serving under Major Edward Jessup at Machiche. (Enlisted 29 Dec 1780, served two years until end of war, and listed as part of 10th Company under Edward Jessup.) The two Sharars primarily they served as scouts. Military information lists him as 5'9" tall.

After the war was over, these families were resettled by British government to the Gaspe Penninsula, leaving on 9 Jun 1784 aboard the "St. Peter" Each family was sent with rations for one year, an axe, hammer, saw, hoe, spade, seeds, a quantity of nails, and a pair of hinges. Sherar received 300 acres. His 14 year old son got 100 acres. Sherar was also was granted land in Cox Township and near Hemmingford. Later he served as a King's Justice of the Peace for many years. Earlier reports list his profession as "dyer" but later reports refer to him as a farmer and his obituary refers to him as "yeoman".
