The authors, Jack Goldberg and Karen O'Mara were kind enough to send me a review copy of this book, along with an excellent tape, describing his principles in a nutshell.  Immediately I noticed the book was very quick and informative and very appealing to even the novice. GO-DIET  is laid out in a easy to read and flowing format. First he discusses the basics of the diet, including the three phases he suggests:
PHASE ONE: THE FIRST THREE DAYS: the recommendations here are mainly: lots of protein, diary and yogurt and restricted carbohydrates to low glycemic carbohydrates. He provides some great suggestions for each meal, and snacks. The nice thing about this section: just try it for three days. It's usually easy enough to eliminate other foods for just three days. And, the list of what you CAN eat is wonderful.  Go to the web site and check out the list: http://www.go-diet.com/
PHASE TWO: PROMOTING HIGH MONOUNSATURATED FATS: this section goes into the MUFAs and how essential they are to our bodies. It is wonderful to be 'given permission' to eat these fats. I keep a supply of almonds always on hand, and just enjoy knowing these fats are good for me. the book gives excellent guidelines on the use of these fats.
PHASE THREE: MAKING THE DIET NUTRITIONALLY SOUND: this section brings in an excellent section on fiber, including a discussion of ground flax seed. His three recommendations here are: High Fiber, Fermented Milk Products and Natural Sources of Vitamins and Minerals. After reading this chapter I started looking for unsweetened Kiefer milk. I searched every location I thought would have it, and all I could find was strawberry sweetened Keifer. The folks in the store said: plain Kiefer doesn't sell ! so, then I used the recipe in the back of the book: 1 QT Whole Milk to 1 Ounce starter. I used a well cultured yogurt. I mixed the two and just set it aside for a few days.
The result was a rich cream the consistency of buttermilk. Now I keep some made in my refrigerator, and look for ways to use it. I've not been able to drink it in a milkshake, but I have found it to be very handy, and a good substitute for yogurt. I like the idea of fermented products, as I feel they will help balance my intestines and help keep me from harboring bacteria such as e coli and beta strep. By eating less carbohydrates and more fermented products such as this, I feel my colon is healthier !!
Chapters three and four go into the diet in more detail, and presents some scientific foundations for this way of eating. This is very informative, and very easy to read, and provides a wonderful scientific basis for the theories the authors present. There is an excellent reference list in the back of the book listing many of the articles and authors cited.
Chapter four also brings in the value of daily exercise and the importance of fiber. After reading this chapter, I went out and purchased some 2 # weights after reading this chapter, and now do upper body exercises with them, especially when walking my 45 minute aerobic walk every day.
The remainder of the book covers such things as shopping tips, menu suggestions and excellent recipes. He gives some great hints for individuals about how to follow the plan and adapt it to busy lifestyles. The recipes are very tasty, and easy, using ingredients most of us have around the house.
A book like this wouldn't be complete without a list of carbohydrate and monounsaturated fats, glossary and Frequently Asked Questions about the Goldberg-O'Mara Diet.
