| I love the down to earth and very readable
style of this author, and desire to be certain her readers
understand the value of low carb eating healthy choices. She
starts by sharing with us her experiences with weight gain and
weight loss following a low carbohydrate reading plans. She
refers to other authors who discuss low carbohydrate eating, and
why she wrote her book. Various low carbohydrate diets are
discussed and amounts of carbohydrates recommended. |
| Dana Carpender spends a chapter discussing the
value of protein, and how to incorporate protein into your diet.
This is a key aspect of low carbohydrate eating: adequate
protein. |
| Chapter 4 presents a concise discussion of the
problem with carbohydrates. After an introduction she talks
about Insulin and its ability to contribute to fat storage.
She talks about cravings for carbohydrates, and the
intensifying, of cravings following carbohydrate intake.
This chapter supports the theory about carbohydrate addiction
that has been described by other writers. Chapter 5
highlights the other medical conditions associated with
carbohydrate intake such as abnormal lipid profiles, diabetes
and heart disease. Depression has also been associated
with carbohydrate intake in some individuals. |
| The author proceeds to discuss techniques
towards a common sense approach to low carbohydrate eating. She
discusses binge eating and presents some common sense approaches
to decreasing binge eating. My experience agrees with her
suggestions: as I increased the protein in my diet, and eat protein
more frequently, my cravings and interest in carbohydrates
and between mean snacking decreased significantly. Feeling
satisfied and well nourished after a meal instead of sleepy and
hungry for more food is worth the changes I have made. Chapter
10, pages 100-103 lists acceptable foods, and strategies for
overcoming binging. |
| Carpender's approach is called he careful carb
approach, and she discusses various options and approaches to
low carb eating. She joins the positive trend towards
individualizing lifestyle choices to the individual. Individuals
have different dietary needs, different metabolisms, and
different approaches to food choices. |
| Chapter 16 presents a nice introduction to the
topic of enhancing success with St John's Wort and Niacin. |
| Appendix: Excellent resources, and low carb
eating in a nutshell. |
