This book is packed with tips and explanations about the current trend in nutrition towards low carbohydrate diets. The author, Susan Somerset Webb cites the wide variety of references available to support making low carbohydrate choices. A Comparison chart of the Six Different Diet Plans, and the foods encouraged on each plan is offered in Appendix A.  I especially enjoyed the authors reviews of  the positive as well as negative aspects of what have come to become best sellers:
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution by Robert C. Atkins
The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program by Richard and Rachel Heller
Protein Power by Michael D. and Mary Eades
SugarBusters by Steward, Andrews, Bethea and Belart
Seven diets are also reviewed, along with three other eating plans that are less restrictive of carbohydrates. The author goes on to discuss several of the other popular books that center on the concepts and values of low carb eating. The author has a wonderful chapter about beginning the low carb lifestyle, and carbohydrate awareness. Once you begin to understand the potential impact of carbohydrates on your blood sugar, and your health, this chapter is a perfect place to start.
Table 5-1 compares carbohydrate grams for four different nutritional lifestyle choices: The Non-dieter, Low-fat dieter, Vegetation and Low-carb.  Considering our 100g or carbohydrates/day is considered adequate by several reliable sources, this comparison is very revealing. The Low-fat diet  cited results in a 408 g of carbohydrates, as compared with a Low-carb eating plan of 24 grams of carbohydrates.  This chapter also has helpful lists that help you define which carbohydrates are best for you.
Any book about healthy eating would be remiss if they didn't mention the value and importance of exercise for both weight management and also for the improvement of blood sugar and hormonal balance. Even 30 minutes /day of walking can be of benefit. Chapter 6 highlights the value of exercise, water, and nutritional supplements. These things, along with making healthy lifestyle choices are the cornerstone of effective weight management.
The thing I have enjoyed so much about this book, and the Low Carb Connection web site is the supportive nurturing from the author and her support team. Frequently an excellent newsletter comes in an email format. Topics of health and several excellent recipes can be found related to the topic. One issues discussed dairy foods, both the positive and negative affects.
The web site contains links to a tremendous amount of  associates web sites centering around this nutrition choice. Low carb eating is not applicable for everyone, and some individuals find they don't have a problem with carbohydrates. For those of us who have seen or experienced the negative effects, this book provides and excellent introduction to the many resources available.
Many thanks to the author for sending me a review copy of this book, and asking to list my Balance Eating Web Site on her web site. If you would like more information about the research that supports these healthier lifestyle choices please contact this author, or me for specific references.
