On 23 Oct. 1845 he submitted a declaration on behalf of his brother Daniel’s pension application: "I think I was in my seventh year when he returned, and in 1881 I was seven years old…I recall his return home when the children raised a dance for joy." DANIEL2 COLE (Junior) (DANIEL1) (20 Feb. 1763 – 17 July 1851) married a Ms. Whitehead. Quite a bit can be found about him in his Virginia Revolutionary Pension Application. He states he was born 20 Feb. 1763 and entered military service in 1780 under Capt. John Britt of Prince William. Interestingly enough, these same records also list his birthdate as 24 Feb. 1769. His father Daniel (Sr.) was opposed to his joining and, after Daniel returned home, told how he had pursued the Dumfries troop as far as Richmond in the hope of returning his son home. On 23 Oct. 1845 his brother Benjamin declared on behalf of Daniel’s pension application that "I don’t recall his absence from home myself, but I do recall hearing him spoken of from time to time by members of the family, my father, mother and older brothers. I think I was in my seventh year when he returned, and in 1881 I was seven years old. I have always understood from the family that Daniel was in the War. This information was derived from my father Daniel Cole, Senior and my three brothers who from their ages had an opportunity of knowing the fact and, furthermore, I have been so informed by many older persons, long since dead. … He was absent from home, I always heard, for nine months. I recall his return home when the children raised a dance for joy." Daniel himself says of his homecoming, "When I returned home the Spring of the year had commenced, and as well as I remember my father was planting corn. To be more particular I think it must have been early in May 1781. In proof of this I know that I saw Marquis de Lafayette with his Army at Dumfries in Prince William County a few days after my return from Albemarle. In that place they came, I think, by water and I spent one day in Dumfries during his stay to witness the parade of his men. Not long after that I think a portion of Washington’s Army did pass through Prince William, and a Company was raised, I in the number, to clear the road from them to pass…I saw the Army pass, and I distinctly remember to have seen a great many drunkards with long gray beards in this army there. I understood it was a portion of Washington’s Army under General Wayne." Daniel moved to Culpepper in 1792. He was placed on the pension roll 24 Nov. 1845 at $20 per annum. He reapplied for lost pension wages in 1850. His Will can be found on Culpeper Will Book R, pg. 406.
