DESCRIPTION: MUSI 271 is the third semester of an integrated two year music theory sequence. This course provides an introduction to the stylistic practices of music from the 19th century and from modern vernacular musics where appropriate. We will begin with a review of topics covered in Theories I and II. Then we will examine several melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal structures found in the music under consideration. MUSI 271 is coordinated with MUSI 271X and will parallel the concepts presented there as much as possible.

PREREQUISITE:  MUSI 172

ATTENDANCE POLICY  Attendance is highly recommended.  Much of the course material is presented in class and may not be found in the text or materials outside the class.  Quizzes and exams missed for whatever reason may not be made up.  The instructor is the sole arbiter of whether an absence is excused or unexcused; the instructor will make such a determination in a fair and objective way on an ad hoc basis.  For quizzes and exams missed because of such excused absence, no grade will be entered.  For quizzes and exams missed because of an unexcused absence, the grade will be a 0 for the missed assignment(s).  The characterization of an absence as excused or unexcused is irrelevant for grading in this course.  Theoretically, one may have legitimate reasons to miss every meeting.  Nevertheless, attendance is highly recommended.  My position is that if one misses multiple meetings for any reason, then

·      that student is not adequately prepared to take the class during that semester and/or

·      that one should not take the class during that semester in which absences are likely and/or

·      that one should withdraw from the class in the event that absenteeism develops for whatever reason(s).

It is also my position that being late for a class will be assessed as an absence.

ASSESSABLE LEARNING GOALS  Quizzes and exams will assess the student's success in absorbing the content of the course, applying standard analytical techniques, extrapolating variant or new analytical techniques from learned principles, part-writing according to prescribed parameters, and expressing all these goals in appropriate technical language and notation.

ASSIGNMENTS (QUIZZES AND EXAMS) POLICY  If two or more assignments are missed for whatever reason, it is highly recommend that the student meet with the instructor to discuss withdrawal from the course.

OBJECTIVES  The student is expected to acquire a comfortable familiarity with the relevant technical language and analytical techniques appropriate to this level of undergraduate music theory as taught in the United States.

At the discretion of the instructor, grades may be lowered or raised according to classroom demeanor.

Final grades for MUSI 171 and 171X grades are combined into one grade that is reported by the registrar.  The final grade for MUSI 171 is figured as 75% of the overall final grade; the final grade for MUSI 171X, 25%.

FURTHER POLICIES:

·    If pencil is not used or if standard size printed music manuscript is not used where appropriate for a      particular graded item, that item will be given the grade of zero.

·    No final grades will be given out to anyone including graduating/comping seniors.  You will get       grades from the registrar.  This is irrevocable and without exception.  Don't even ask.

·    Before I will consider providing a reference or recommendation, you

     1.  Must always address me as Professor Collaros,

     2.  Must have taken at least two classes with me, one of which must be an academic,

     3.  Must have received an A or B in all courses taken with me, and

     4.  Waive right to see said reference or recommendation.

·      In compliance with the Bethany College policy and equal access laws, I am available to discuss appropriate academic accommodations that may be required for students with disabilities. Requests for academic accommodations are to be made during the first three weeks of the semester, except for unusual circumstances, so arrangements can be made.
