FROM THE DIRECTOR: October 21, 2005
I started the World Class Junior Tennis Program 6 years ago, to provide juniors with an opportunity to learn to play tennis. Since then, large numbers of juniors have chosen the program to develop a true love of the game while they learn proper stroke production and get fit. As the number of players in the program continues to grow, I am truly happy to see their daily progress, and their enjoyment in learning and excelling at the game, not to mention the tremendous success of my tournament players. This year, we can boast Jordan Portner, #1 in the state in Boys’ 10s, Kevin Gates, #1 in the state in Boys’ 12s, and Tommy Gates, top ten in the Boys’ 14s! Hats off to their dedication and work ethic! Whatever your goal - from learning fundamentals, making the high school team or competing in sanctioned tournaments - my program is designed to meet your needs.
Back to Basics:
The basis for the program is simple. I believe that fundamentals are essential in building a tennis player. Fundamentals can only be achieved with constant repetition in an environment that is positive and enjoyable for the student. In order to create that atmosphere, which encourages learning excellence, I have put together a team of great instructors who stress fundamentals, each with their own flair. As the fundamentals of stroke technique and footwork become second nature to our juniors, we then build on that core by integrating strategy in match play situations, to develop complete players. Throughout this journey from interested newcomer to skilled junior player, I constantly evaluate and guide each student’s development, to ensure that he/she receives the individual instruction that they need to fulfill their potential.
The Pros:
I constantly incorporate different pros throughout the year, and my core group - Bobby Hoffman, Gene Cutter, Becky Knouse, and Kristin Manglitz are terrific. With an eye on the children’s development, they create a fun atmosphere for leaning. They all teach traditional stroke mechanics with a proven record of success, incorporating their unique vibrant personalities and energetic methods.
The
In addition to the World Class Junior Program, private lessons, tennis leagues, camps and tournaments all provide my students with even more beneficial instruction and experience. Once a student develops the basic skills through the clinics, and wishes to advance even further, the Maryland Junior Tennis League provides them with a unique opportunity to play matches with other beginning tournament players. Unlike other leagues, the MJTL for 14s and under was developed to ensure that young players feel comfortable – it’s not just about pure competition. I personally hire the coaches, who are very attuned to the needs of beginning tournament players, and help the children with all aspects of competition, including sportsmanship and strategy. My main concern is that the students enjoy their first competitive experiences, and wish to continue playing the game. The 14s and over MJTL is designed to continue the progress and competition for our older players, with more of a focus on the details and nuances of the game.
Other Offerings:
Private lessons are a great way for children to hone their skills or address certain problems. They can be arranged directly though the clinic instructors, subject to court availability. Due to the high number of children in the program, I am now offering fall, winter and spring leagues, which are a great way for children to get involved in competitive tennis teams.
How I Can Help:
My main focus is your child’s tennis experience. From the moment you register, I personally supervise your child’s development by evaluating and placing him/her in the proper clinic. During these clinics, I observe and comment as necessary, in order to enhance each student’s learning process.
I put a priority on overall quality assurance and supervision, and I also handle the array of administrative issues associated with the program. As a result of these factors, and because of high demand for lesson time, I have had to limit myself with regard to teaching private lessons. I have every confidence that my other instructors will meet your child’s needs in that area, and if there is anything that I can do to help facilitate or enhance your child’s lesson with another instructor, I would be happy to do so.
Each child is very special to me, and I thank you for the opportunity you have given me to participate in his or her development. My hope is that each student will acquire an enduring love of the game and embrace it for life. I welcome questions and comments from parents, to optimize my students’ tennis experiences.
