Description: This page contains a walk through on how to release/renew an IP address in Mac OS 10.2.

Symptoms: No network connectivity. IP address is "self assigned" 169.254.x.x

Goal: Follow these steps to generate a legitimate IP address.

1. Click on the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences.



2. Click the icon.
3. Here we see the Network System Preferences with a 169.254.x.x IP.



4. Click on Using DHCP and choose Manually.



5. To release the IP click Apply Now.



6. Click on Manually and set it back to Using DHCP.



7. Click Apply Now to renew the IP address.



8. Here we see the Network System Preferences with a legitimate IP address.



9. When finished click on the System Preferences menu and choose Quit.
